Angry 1998 GSXL Overheated because shop installed Hoses incorectly

    Hello Fellow SeaDoo'er,

I am going to use bullets instead of essay format

    -Get ski from shop

-go to the bay to test the ski

-ski overheats after 30 to 40 seconds of mostly WOT

    -stop engine and look inside

-smoke is pouring out of engine bay, no fire though.

-water dripping from my glove is sizzling on the head.

-get towed back to shore and discover that the cooling hose from the pump and the flushing hose have been swapped.

-also discover that valve on top of water-box is melted off, coupler from Pipe to water-box is blistering and hose from water-box to muffler is also blistering.

-take it back to shop where the guy sais he will take care of it.

-get the ski back again and take it for another test run.

-AGAIN the temp light comes on, this time 3 to 4 minutes into the ride.

-I look in the engine bay and discover that the cooling hose from the jet pump has come off so no water is being pumped into the motor, it's actually filling up my hull with lots of water.

-I fixed that back on shore and went out again.

-now the motor has a slight bogging problem at full throttle. It's mostly ok but every 10 to 15 seconds it looses power for about .5 seconds and then resumes.
-Also it's top speed is down by about 10mph

?SO now it's back at the shop and I am VERY concerned about what damage this all could have caused to my Jetski.

?What should I have be specifically testing to make sure the motor is ok?
Any Tricks to testing things internal to the motor so I can prove that something is wrong that he caused.

?What are the most commen failures when a 951 overheats?

I appreciate anyones commets or questions.

    Thank you,
    Klystron2

ouch thats sucks. i think your going to be in for a pretty nice sized bill when he tries to charge you for it. you might have melted a piston. overheating will also cause DETO. in either case your gona need a top end. i wouldn't pay him a dime for the repairs. and then i would never take it him again.

I would do a compression test first.

No, first I would take out a restraining order so that this dude would be arrested if he came within half a mile of one of my boats. I mean come on, the pipe drain hose (the one to the flush fitting) runs down the bottom of the hull. The intake hose runs along the top of the compartment, T's off to the WCvalve and then into the head. You would have to be a complete and total moron to mix those two up.

Ok, I had to get that out. Now, check the compression. Overheating swells the pistons (which can make it sieze) and can also take the tension of the rings (more of a 4-stroke problem, though). An overheated piston can crack, or a hole can develope where the ring pin is (pin holds heat) or the pin can "relax" into the soft aluminum and the ring spin (bad, bad, bad).

You may find one or both of the cylinders well down from before.

This happened to my 96 GSX. Hose came off jet pump, filled hull up with water and turned white paint on motor brown. I took head off, changed o-rings and inspected wall, top of piston and skirt. Looked good to me so put it back together and rode it liked it owed me money. Compression still good at 145 a side and max prm is 6,950.
