engine runs but drive shaft does not spin

well i changed out my pump bearings in my slt 750 becuase they went bad, put everything back together and went ride for a few hours, everything ran great. went out the next day and all it would do is rev up and not go any wheres. the coupler off the shaft was spinning but the drive shaft was not, took the pump off and the spines looked fine, i stuck my finger in the coupler and those splines felt fine as well.........is it possible for the drive shaft to back out of the splines???? maybe i put the pump back together wrong? any help would be great thanks

Do you have a rubber bonded coupler?

Those rubber bumpers on the ends of the drive shaft prevent the shaft from moving forward and back. Without them, the drive shaft can shift around, causing unexpected wear on the splines.

Generally speaking, every part is there for a reason, and leaving things out isn't a good idea, unless you have a specific reason to change it from stock.

Did you torque the impeller to 100 ft lbs?

Maybe the impeller spun off the stub shaft, or the stub shaft cracked.

i didn't torque it, i just kind of tightened it untill it wasnt coming off , it was on there solid when i pulled the pump.it looked like they had a small gap where the wear ring is and where it connects to the tunnel though. maybe the shaft wasnt in there good. i took a mallet and was able to knock the shaft in further to wear it wasnt spinning freely... the wearing should be flush against the tunnel right?

The impeller is supposed to be torqued to 100ft-lbs torque on the stub shaft.
Do you have an impeller wrench tool, or a spare 90 degree bent drive shaft to apply the torque to the impeller?

Not sure what you are whacking with the mallet
You aren't hammering on the end of the stub shaft, are you?

Each section of the jet pump must mate cleanly and fully whit the next. The mating faces around the section rims must be clean and smooth, so the sections can fully seat.

You also need those rubber bumpers (or something similar) in place on each end of the drive shaft.

Did the splines look good on both ends? Impeller and coupler

Do you have a rubber mounted coupler (black) or the solid stainless piece?

FYI: I advise against putting your finger inside the coupler to check splines. You may get a nasty metal splinter by doing that!!! Ask me how I know.....
