    97 sltx wont rev up

mush the gas all the way and the ski will only do about half of its rpm, sounds like a rev limiter. any throttle and it will just bog like the timing is retarted. has propper plugs and strong spark with lots of fuel dumping down the carbs but just goes bung bung bung bung bung........like its choked or somthing and this is out of the water. will idle and start perfect.

display is broke so i dont know of any warnings and im not familiar with this model at all and cant find anything in the manual that will help.

Unplug the dead MFD - does the problem go away?

Next check the CDI part number - is this original or updated Ignition System?

i have not unplugged the dead mfd and i will check the cdi tomorrow.

i know the engine is sound and has great compression but just wont get to max rpm.

if i knew what limp mode felt like, i would assume this would be it.

    thanks k447

Disconnect the Gray (or Tan) wire from the CDI - this is the RPM limiter for limp mode. With the wire disconnected, the CDI should allow full RPM.

    1997 SLTX (1992-1998 Polaris Service Manual) page 7.27a (page 463);

    "RPM Limiter Function (1997 SL780, SLT780, SLTX, SL1050)

An RPM limiting system (see models listed above) protects the engine by electronically limiting RPM in the event of engine overheat. This feature is designed to help prevent engine damage due to engine overheating

    Engine Overheat
If the engine overheats, the thermal switch becomes conductive and provides a ground path for the tan wire leading from the CDl module and the Multi-Function Display.

The Multi-Function Display will display a "HOT" warning message, the warning light will flash, and the engine RPM will be limited to approximately 4200 on 780 models, or 4500 on 1050cc models.

A circuit within the CDl senses the ground path connection and activates the limiting function. See diagrams below.

    Low Fuel
No low fuel limiters are present on these models....."

If the RPM limiter is causing the problem, then check the Tan wire and overheat sensor for shorts or sensor failure.

There have been a few cases recently where the MFD was not working. After much poking around, unplugging the 'not-working' MFD solved the engine problem.

Moral of the story - if the MFD isn't working, and you can't get it working, unplug it until you get the other problems solved.

Is the MFD really dead, or is it a bad fuse, or some other fixable issue?

Do you have Digital Wrench or PODIAG software?

You can still repair the Ficht engines without the software, but sometimes you have to approach it differently from the service manual.
