There was a gator like that on my dock this past summer...
Needless to say I don't let the dogs play in the river anymore...
It's funny...when you see them and they're less than 5' or 6' long you don't even give them a second thought...However when you see them and they're like 10'+ suddenly you have a whole new level of repsect and start looking for trees to climb...
