Exclamation !!!oil inlet fitting vibrated out of oil pump!!!

    Hey everyone,
I have been working on a 2003 Genesis i for a while now and i just totally rebuilt the engine, new crank and all. When i got it, it did not run one cyl had no compression. It was running awesome, it has about 2.5 hours on the rebuild and today when i was coming in I noticed the oil light was getting lower and lower. When i got back to the dock, i pulled it out of the water and found the bilge was full of oil. The problem is the fitting on the oil pump that the main line from the tank connects to had come out of the pump! I think the engine is ok b/c it is fuel injected and dosent use that much oil to begin with and it didnt run for that long after i noticed the level going down, maybe 5 min. I didnt check compression yet but i started it out of the water and it sounds fine. Also there is air bubbles in the oil lines to the individual cyls, and when running out of the water, they did not move fast at all! Has anyone ever had this happen?

I have not heard of an oil pump loosing the barb fittings.

You can accelerate the pumping rate by moving the pump arm to simulate wide open throttle, and idling with the garden hose (maximum two minutes idle time). This increases the flow rate to about 2.5 times the normal low RPM flow rate.

Even with the arm at high flow position, the oil isn't pumped all that fast, since the engine is idling (low RPM).

Did anything hit the oil pump body to cause the fitting to loosen?

That fitting looks kinda bent where it was pressed into the pump body. Not exactly a 90 degree angle between the two nipples.

I wonder if someone in the past might have been messing around in that area, and inadvertently put pressure on the fitting

i noticed that too, but when i put the fitting back into the pump, it sits square... weird, anyway the new pump is installed and all the oil is cleaned out of the bilge. i ran the motor with fogging oil at first while the air was blead out of the lines and all is well!
