Cheap car for a work beater?

Need to buy a cheap car for work commute - my Lightning is going to kill me on gasoline bills when I move out to the burbs. What are you guys using? I'm thinking one of those cheap Kia's. They knock down great mileage and they have a killer warranty.

i picked up a 1993 toyota 4cyl "pickup". looks like poop, but runs GREAT. picked it up for 400 bucks, with a toolbox on the back, Mp3/CD player, and cold AC. she has about 145K miles, but who cares! Since I have owned it, I have put about 10K on it.

    Best investment to date.

P.S. I now also use it to put the ski in the water, no since in getting my jeep rusty from the salt water.

I'm goin to work in a 98' Eclipse now. Good on gas and it screams thru traffic with the 5 speed. Only thing with these is you have to be sure the timing belt has been replaced if it has over 60,000 miles. If not it's a time bomb.

For a good warranty, if you buy new, the Hundai and KIA are great in the warranty dept. and mileage like you mentioned.

For used, I would go with a Honda Accord or Civic. Or a Toyota Camry, small Toyota Pickup or Corrola.

My buddie's wife is knocking back 47mph in town and 52mph hwy with a diesil Jetta.

What burbs you headed to ?
You might could do some car poolin. I started about 3 years ago with one of the accounting guys, we were doing so we could get home sooner, sure does help out now with the way gas prices have went up. Plus we got the HR lady and a girl from accounting also, I only have to drive 1 week out of the month. That cuts my gas bill from $320 to $80
