    GTX SC carbon ring ??????

AM putting in friends seadoos for summer use.
06 GTX SC 185hp boat. All fine. DId oil, plugs, cooant, etc

FIred up and sounded normal for 1-2 minutes..
then make a horrible sound... like engine is revving twice
as fast as should, but I look at tach and still 1900rpms.

Can start up and sounds normal for 20-30 seconds, then gets
really loud and vibrates boat really bad.

I thought at first, is this what a s/c sounds like when washers
failing, so I checked and I can't turn s/c by hand at all..

Then got to do it again and looked below and it looks
like driveshaft near accordian boot is vibrating really bad.
Also I feel "slop" in driveshaft up at engine that the other
    boat doesn't have..

Is this classic carbon seal or are there other wearable parts
    along driveshaft??
    THanks for your help guys!

If the carbon seal/accordian boat would have failed the boat would have sank. I don't know what to say about the driveshaft vibrating.. are you saying that there is a noticeable difference between the two boats? Could have bad pump bearings?

Real BIG difference just in it's own idle/sound as
    soon as it starts vibrating..
Almost like someone put in a real loud shop vac inside
the hull.. Thats why i looked at s/c hoses first..
But then noticed the driveshaft accordian area would
vibrate real badly as noise starts.
I can shut off, then restart and is normal for few seconds,
then bingo, it gets that loud/vibration..

I've never felt/heard this before on any of my/friends boats

Are you running the ski on the trailer or in the water? If it's on the trailer, try spraying the seal with water from underneath to cool it down and lubricate it... Ron

I had thought about that Ron.
IT happens so quickly .. I 've worked on several
4tecs and not had a problem running on the trailer
for 30--60 seconds at a time..
I know "something" is wrong.. Just trying to narrow it
down so I can order correct parts..
There is not a good parts supplier anywhere around me, so
I have to order online and wait.

The carbon rings are coooled by the water the ski is riding in. The water is also lubricating the carbon ring. Pull back the rubber flap covering the ring and pour some water onto the carbon ring then start it back up. you might have to pour some water on the ring while the ski is running to cool/lubricate it. Its not a problem. It happens sometimes after a peroid of storage. Getting lubricating spray all over the ring can make it chatter. Used to happen on the old two-strokes all the time.
