Optimal impeller tip to pump vane distance?

Just curious ... the distance from my 15/20 trailing edge to the pump vanes is around 14mm. Is there an optimal distance for pump efficiency? It seems like closer would be more efficient ...

I would imagine that if the fins were cupped the opposite direction of impeller rotation to transition rotational water direction to longitudinal that it would be beneficial to have tighter tolerance. Other than that I don't think it would matter much.
