    Half to full throttle

2 stroke newbie.I've recently purchased a 2001 xl800 with about 40 hours on it.Runs better than I expected for a 2 cylinder.I've learned a lot from reading post on this forum.Installed wave eater clips and coupler and Rive ride plate, removed oil inj pump(went premix),otherwise stock. At little more than half throttle runs 7000 rpm 51 mph.Full throttle 7200 rpm 55.5 mph.Not much difference. Is this normal? Is this because pv's close at higher rpm's?As long as nothing is wrong,I'm happy with the performance.Just don't want to blow it up if it's leaning out on top end.Any input will be appreciated.

    welcome to the forum.

your powervalves will open long before you get to 7k rpm.

i'm assuming you have a tachometer that you are getting the numbers from?

51mph sounds correct for an 800cc

pull your plugs and check the the color, someone here had a chart of what lean vs rich looked like. anyone know where its at

Plugs are new,not much color yet, little wet looking.I'm thinking thats normal for a 2 stroke.I read on pro tec website the valves close at 7400 rpm with stock controller.Don't think i'm hitting that.Tack is kinda small though.I did find out impeller is Solas(or at least it looks like it).Just don't feel much difference in the last 1/3 of throttle.Maybe that's normal?

Found a water leak under muffler.Couple of small pinholes.Looks like coroded from inside out.Never buy a dock ski!they dont get flushed.Of course water was being sucked into carbs.Hope it didn't do too much damage!Guess i'll find out if it has anything to due with performance,I would imagine it does.Don't think water is flammable.
