Major Problem with my ski!
hey everyone im new to the Yamaha forums but ive been a member of the RXP forums for about a year and ive got a problem with my xl800 yamaha waverunner. This is our first ski until we got another one which is the RXP bc we decided to pull 2 skis and we decided to try out sea doo and im liking it better. The problem with our waverunner is everytime we put it in the water....it takes about 10 min to start it up, i mean sometimes the motor doesnt even turn or start and by doing that your wasting the battery and eventually its gone. Thats the main problem with thatt ski and also on a side note we had to get a new engine in that ski bc a piston blew through the motor, so we just got it back a week ago and we took it out to the lake and it took us again 10 min to start and we got it goin but only went up to 20mph and wouldnt go any further then that. then we took it out yesterday again and couldnt get it started, and we put new spark plugs in bc we think that it was only running on 1. Need some help haha thanks guys

You need to start your engine on the ramp when the ski is still DRY, and the pump is not in the water. Just a quick 20sec crank should be enough.
Try the following sequence of events in this order.
1. Ski on trailer, on dry land.
2. Close choke fully.
3. Open throttle HALF WAY.
4. Hit and hold the start button, SLOWLY INCREASING throttle until it fires.
5. Open choke fully.
Other helpful hints:
-Good battery is a must. If you even THINK about needing jumper cables something is wrong.
-New plugs are your friend.
-No more than 10 seconds on the starter, with a one minute cool down.
-When was carbs last rebuilt?
-Installing a primer system will eliminate cold starts all together.

thank you so much for posting that.....and also do u know maybe why my ski wont exceed the 20mph mark on my ski?? is that just a problem they made or u think it might have been running on 1 good plug??

I have no idea. It sounds like you might need to start by changing the plugs. I can't really tell by your description.
Where are you located?

Look for some help from the Ohio boyz on here. I hear those buckeyes are good folk. These are the most simple engines in a jetski you can get.

Dont know your ski.
But you need to rebuid your carbs thats( most likely )why it blew and you got the rebuild in te first place.
Also get a manual and do a compression test to see what shape the motor is in.
