Check for 12 volt power on the connector at the MFD location. Red/Purple wire is 12 volts (pin 2), black is negative (pin 1).

Also check for corrosion on the MFD pins.

If all this seems good, then the MFD is probably bad.

    What are you after?

If the MFD is bad, you need a replacement.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for these MFD to fail. Especially if any moisture has gotten inside.

Working used replacement MFD seem to be going for $150 and up.

You can run the machine without the MFD plugged, but of course you won't be able to see any warning light or fuel/oil levels.

Never leave a dead MFD connected. Unplug the MFD if it is not working.

Yours would be an 8-pin, as 12-pin MFD was only used in the 1999-2000 Pro 785 and SLX models.

I don't know who is close enough to you in New York state.

You might try sending a private message to Jay (4strokepolaristech). If he cannot do the work, he might now someone who can.

Or you can do the work yourself!
There is plenty of information around here regarding carb rebuilding, and how-to support
