    Ghost problem in safety switch

1998 GSX LTd 951 cc motor.

Running fine.....worked on carbs and put it back together to run.

Cannot get 2 beeps, dead. Fooled with wires and one time it went
live. We found a dead wire, black/yellow, from interior plug to MPEM.
    Jumped it still no go.

Can you bypass this security key?? Just hot wire it so that you just
hit start to run?? What is the interaction to the MPEM?

Has anyone had one of these round switches where the lanyard goes
    go bad??

    Sure have.
The internal magnets get weak and can't read the chip.
Try cleaning the post with warm soapy water first.
Bets are the DESS post is bad.

push the start button 2 times and see if it wakes up the mpem. than try putting any magnet over the dess post and see if it wakes up the mpem. if pushing the start button 2 times wakes up the mpem and putting a magnet over the dess post doesn't, you probably have a bad dess post. if it still doesn't wake up, you either have a dead battery, forgot to put a wire back on, or broke one of the ground wires going to the front cover when messing with carbs

    thanks for the input

tried the magnet and starter suggestions, no go. Will look for
that ground to front cover. However we can jump the starter
solenoid and it fires up great. Battery is new and on a tender. New
    battery wires all around.

What's weird is that it started and ran OK outside of the carb issues
last weekend. We did nothing to it electrically, just didn't work.
However we did find that black/yellow wire from DESS to MPEM to
be bad, jumped it and have tested continuity on all other wires which
    are OK.

Could the MPEM sort of die of old age all of a sudden??

Try pushing start putton several (I think its 5) times to put MPEM into diagnostic mode.
One short and one long beep will tell you thats it.
From what you have described, still betting the DESS post went bad.
    Common thing......
