has anybody seen reasonable gains when removing the stock air box and just running open throttle bodies

Do a search on Rossnemo's Throttle body mod.

You will see minor gains by doing that, but if you want to get maximum performance i can modify your set of throttle bodies with the Sonic Boom stage 2 mod.
Nice power gains all across the rpm spectrum.

your going to have to rejet everytime you change anything with the air box on a 2 stroke or youl stick a piston, for me the best is only the air box without the screen and that will give you a good intake signal for the carbs, and your still going to have to rejet

Fuel injection is very different. No need to worry about that by just removing the airbox on an EFI ski. There is no (signal) on EFI...

Taking out your airbox doesn't really do so much performance wise. But it does help the ski breath better
