    Slt 780 problems

I have a 96 Slt 780 that is giving me a wierd problem.

When i fire the bike up there is no issue. Starts first try everytime. Idles great. Hit the throttle and runs great but acts as if its in limp mode. (read slow)

If i get in choppy water and cavitate the rpms rise and bike will run all out until you let go of the throttle or try to turn sharp, then the process starts over.

i dont understand it. any tips or ideas of where to start would be great.

    thanks,
    vic

    What's your compression look like?

    What impeller does it have?

Sorry for the slow reply. The compression is good in all 3 cyls, I dont know about the impeller the dealer said it was an oem.

But i have some new info. The front 2 carbs are getting a stedy flow of fuel under hard throttle but the rear is hardly getting any. When the pump cavitates and the motor spools the rear gets about half of what the front 2 gets. The settings are all to factory. Could this be jettings?

It sounds like it's time to go through and clean the carbs. What color are your fuel lines? It's not likely that the jetting is a problem. When you break the pump suction/ cavitate, do the rpms pick up and run better?

    The fuel lines are black.

When the pump breaks suction the r's kick up and the bike seems to run great. But i still dont think the back carb is getting a full dose of fuel. i just dont know what else would restrict fuel flow to the carb

It sounds carb related, and they need going through/ cleaned/ rebuilt. Check the high and low speed adjuster settings per manual if the engine is stock. What's the history of the ski? It seems the fuel lines have been replaced. What else has been done?
Service manual can be found here.

Broken reed petal is my guess. But it's weird that it's not getting gas, a broken reed should flood it out, not lean it out.

There are filters inside the carbs. That one may be clogged, or maybe the needle is stuck, possibly a bad diaphragm, or the needle lever is bent down too much.

Either way, you need to inspect the carbs.

I was thinking about it more too and thought maybe stuck needle. If it isn't getting gas don't run it like that unless ya want a hole in that piston.
