    getting 99 XPL

i getting a 99 xpl this weekend i think i am getting a sweet deal. i am trading a 91 kawasaki 650sx strait up for it. the guy said that the guy that had it before him was the first owner. the first guy took it to a shop and the guys at the shop said that it had a rod knock. im going to rebuild the motor anyways. does anyone else here think i'm getting a good deal?

Yes. Congrats! It probably only needs a bore and pistons. Make sure you doo the fuel lines and clean your carbs too.

    Welcome to GH!

"Rod Knock" you might have to clarify what he meant. I assume it means a bearing has worn on the crankshaft ??? If that is the case your up for a new crank and maybe a set of bearings for the balance shaft as well as a new cylinder bore and piston/rings. You cannot properly diagnose a 2 stroke crankshaft problem just by listening to it while its running like you can a 4 stroke motor .

I am going to go out a limb here and bet you just have the old piston skirt slap they get when you let the cylinder rust up. You might luck out and get out of it pretty cheap. On the other hand you are taking a chance it could be more. I lucked out sounds like a similar noise to what I had found pistons skirts tove up bored cylinder new pistons and gaskets and she runs like a champ

    Sounds like a good deal!

Make the swap, then rebuild it with OEM parts, replace all the fuel lines in process and you should be good to go.

i bought mine with i fresh top end, 20 hours later it threw a rod through the block, i bought my rx with 200 origanal hours and put 280hrs on it, and started running bad, just locked up a ring and needs another top end, IMO it all has to do with who does the top end and if you buy used engine you might as well think the worst will happen, so far i blew 2 951s and a 4tec. and i baby my skis. i think i will be buying a honda or yamaha, its nice to fly at 70mph but if your always fixing it whats the use.
