What ignition for GPR? Weird problem with R-D CDI

Just got my gpr back together after installing a new t-w crank and lightened stock flywheel. Now a new problem has developed. It wont rev past 4900 rpm. The rev limiter kicks in right at 4900 rpm. However, it will rev past that if the pump comes out of the water, with no load on it, then it will rev all the way to 7000 rpm in the water. Really weird. Put the stock cdi in, problem gone. Tried the R-D again, same problem. It was fine before the new crank and flywheel machine work, so it it possible the flywheel work is causing the R-D cdi to freak out?

    Thanks guys!

I dont see how a lightened and balanced oem flywheel could make your r&d cdi wig out. Its pretty comon for an R&D cdi to fail. Atleast that is what I have heard. I have always used advent CDIs. If you know someone with another gpr(SPUD) Install the cdi in his ski and see if it does the samething.

Rob, what are you gaining by using an aftermarket cdi on your setup? Is it worth the hassle?

oh, I had no idea you were running a bb with porting. I guess you do need the aftermarket cdi.

So where is the best deal on a new Advent cdi? I know nothing about them. Do they set them up for your setup?

    Hi Rob,

Just go to the Advent site. They are 575 brand new. If yamaha didn't have that highly advanced spot around 4500 rpm's on the stock unit the 3 degree key would be great. Heres 84. Stock is 83. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Here is Yam 83 (stock). Lowell doesn't think its a good idea to run a 3į key with it. Note the advance from 4200 to 5000 rpm's

Try www.atlanticjetsports.com/. They have them for $495. I would get the remote switch that mounts on the outside of the box making it easy to change between 4 timing curves. The remote switch is an extra $65 I think

Cool, so do they set it up with those curves or can you change them? What cdi are you going to run on your big bore?
