96 XP Won't Chirp or Start

My buddy has a 96 XP, we have been trying to get it going for the last couple of days for the first time this year and it won't chirp or start.
We have cleaned the posts on the battery and connectors, connectors on the starter, everything in the ignition box and checked all of the fuses. We even swapped batteries. The battery light and the other 3 lights on the instrument cluster come on but you don't hear and chirping and the engine isn't turning over nor is the starter even clicking. Can you give us any suggestions as to what we can try or check next.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hey Steve. Did you guys unplug the top plug on the coil box and inspect the pins for corrosion?

No "beep-beep" could easily mean the buzzer is bad, but everything else works.

Also unplug the black and white wires going to the solenoid coil and inspect the pins there too. Afterward, try jumping/shorting the two large terminals and see if the starter turns over. If not, check the ground wire under the heat shrink tubing covering the crimp connector under the engine. It will most likely be corroded.

    Welcome to GH!

    Robert

Yes, short the big fat ones, and the starter should turn over.

Hi, we shorted the two connectors together (pos from batt to poss to starter) and did'nt hear a clicking, no arching, or anything. Also check and the poss from the batter had voltage and the wire running to the starter had continuity. Also checked the ground running from the battery to the starter and it had continuity. We couldn't find a ground wire running to the bottom of the motor.

Do you think the starter is bad?

    Thanks again..

    Steve,

Continuity means nothing under load. It will ohm good under no load but once you put starter load on it, a corroded cable will open. Make sure the small ground wire is good from the black box to battery, and hook up a jumper cable from a good engine ground to the negative post. Also put your meter leads on the starter positive post, and battery ground (Use alligator clips (jumper wires) to install "hands free". If you get 12 volts at the starter when shorting the solenoid, and the starter doesn't turn over, then the starter is bad.

The no "beep beep" is a different issue to address. After confirming you have good grounds (check ground post inside black box for corrosion) and above steps will confirm too, then check the 15 amp fuse in the black box, and then all three fuses in the gray box.
