OEM Nose cone, No cone, or Solas cone?

I know that this has been beaten to death, but I'm putting my 15/22r in tomorrow and I just want to doublecheck before I do anything.

From what I'm read I think the general consensus is no cone. Is that correct?

Cone for me... with French Vanilla!

Actually, we run all of ours with no cone. If nothin' else, it cuts down on the time/labor while pitching impellers.

The cone does make it easier to install the pump. It also keeps the splines protected and lubricated.

However... I GPS'd a stock '04 RXP at 69.9 mph recently. When we pulled the pump to modify the ski, we found the stock nose cone somehow on the outside of the front of the prop. It was stretched over the hub that it normally fits inside. I'm starting to think that this somehow helped the top speed and would like to experiment some more.

So far we've got 3 for and 3 against. I guess I should have made a poll.

    Any other opinions?

ANYTHING you do to improve performance also decreases reliability. Some are not necessarily intuitive, like higher cylinder pressures leading to premature wear on the rings. Others are obvious, like high boost SC wheels causing slip in the washers.

The nose cone removal is about as easy as it gets to determine the tradeoff. Removal has been well-documented many times to increase speed by about .5 mph. However, you clearly are now exposing the splines to water instead of protecting them with a seal and grease. Eventually, the splines will wear out, possibly requiring a new driveshaft and propeller.

It's really for you to decide if you want to trade some long term reliability for a little more speed.

if you decided on the cone make sure you use a decent amount of RED loctite
