Are PWC-only Poker Runs worthwhile to put on?

I'm thinking about putting on as a fund raiser next year, but I'm wondering if its even worth it.

I think you'd be more likely to attract riders from further away versus boats, but do people really turn out in large numbers for these?

At this point, the plan is to have BBQ, cash prizes, 50/50, radio station on-site, and a few other things. I'm just trying to figure out if it would even be worth it to organize one. Also have an onsite, private launch and plenty of dock and beach space for parking.

And uncertain gas prices definately don't help.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm thinking of Lake Wylie near the NC/SC border (Buster Boyd bridge area) with an approximate ride distance of 20-25 miles depending on water level and location participation.

I think it sounds like a fine idea. I'm close enough to ride it too.

    Well, that's a positive note.

I'd also appreciate any thoughts or ideas on one of these events since it will be the first one I've done.

    me too

I wanted to do a poker run out here for the over 50 crowd, to benefit our local senior center..call it the "tin man" ski-a-thon . We're a bit far off the path, but not for folks from elpaso.

Been a bit busy to follow thru with it so far this year, but I'd like to put some time to it before the summer is over.

Isn't there a way to do it where the entrants are covered under their own policy? I've also heard of people calling them "Fun Runs" instead of poker runs to get around the negativity of the term "poker run".

you should probly talk to some of the moderators about this...there was a concern about this for MB5. I think RX951(billy) did a lot of the leg work on this issue. good luck

the promoter of the event is the reason the riders are at the event, if something bad happens, the promoter best have some insurance..lots of insurance.

Poker run doesn't have a negative slant here, almost everybody here knows what it is. Besides, the prhase "to benefit xxxx charity" always defuses the naysayers.

If time permits I'll continue on my research of the event requirements, but I know that any event run in a state park has to have a million buck liability policy.

Just to offer some insight, just because you have to have a million dollar liability policy doesnt mean its expensive. My company does a lot of weddings where certain places require these same million dollar policies. I contacted some insurance company called "Markel" and got the policy for like 200 bucks. I dont know how this translated to what you want to do, but it couldnt hurt to give the Markel guys a call and see what it would cost.

the cost is pretty low from what I've heard from our mayor for the insurance they have for our town annual parade..but any time the state park and water are involved I expect to pay ota.

Thanks for the lead on that company, I'll give em a try.
