Question 800 grate = speed loss?

I tested an R&D 800 grate over my R&D 1200/1300 grate (2-bar) today and it lost speed. I tried the 800 first and it went 64. I swapped to the 1200/1300 grate and it went 66. The ski usually runs about 67 with an occasional 68. What do you guys think? Both grates are out of the box R&D.

    grate

when i bolted it up it seemed to not fit quite right at first. it seemed to need some wiggling and i never did think it was perfect. is this common? the rear area was where i saw most of the quirky fitment.

Nate I have never liked an 800 grate.

2 weeks before Mud Bug I saw Akent Lose 1 mile per hour putting on a grate that a respected forum member let him use.

Your results are same as we have seen here.

In the real world, with an 800 grate My local Rxp drives away from me.

hmm i thought the fastest skis were running this grate? or faster maybe i should say. i always thought that it would give you MPH with a sacrifice. i didn't mind the sacrifice i just never got the gain lol

Wow. I have always got 1 mph+ everytime with an 800 grate. I finally sold all my 1200 grates. I tested them back to back over and over and over.

The only time the 1200 were ever faster was in rough enough chop that would shut my E-Trex off.

    Everybodies setup is different.

    chop

strange. there was only a light ripple out today. i didn't cavitate, although the ski with the 800 grate on DID feel more sluggish out of the hole. the ski with the 1200 grate on seemed to just pick up and go. i was just wondering where that extra MPH was.

have any of you had to modify the 800 grate to fit? it didn't seem to fit right at first. one of the rear bolt holes barely lined up..

My 800 grate gives me 1.5mph+ over my 1200 grate. The only place my 800 grate suffers is right from a dead hit. After its on plane, I can't tell much of difference except the 1200 has a more stable solid feel.

The 800 grate without question is faster sometimes on a out of the box r&d 800 you will be better off sanding on the inside of the grate where it bolts up to the pumpshoe Make sure the grate is level with the shoe you might have to do alot of sanding but you will like the results

Something is not right. for those running or have run the 800 grate, it is definitely (est. 1 mph) faster then the 1200 grate.

I have never personally run the 800 grate, but I do know, thats a free mph that everyone bolts on.

Please check everything on your boat. RPM's, installation, mounting surfaces, grate condition, ect......

Like these other heavy hitters have mentioned, you should see more speed from it.
