should i get it fixed????? please read

i have a 2002 virage txi with 42 hours on it. the stator houseing is cracked. I took it to a shop and was told most likely the stator and fly wheel will have to be replaced (maybe more won't know tell its all expossed). The shop quoted my 500-700 for parts and 350 for labor.

I have never paid for any work to be done on a jet ski and want to know from so of you guys if this price sound fair. thanks

Are you willing to do the work yourself?

$700 will buy you a lot of good used parts

    Where are you located?

Just out of curiosity, what were the symptoms? It wasn't leaking water into the hull when the engine was running, was it?

it was not getting enought spark. if you pulled on spark plug and put it on ground it would start up but when the egine was cranking it sounded like something was lose in the egine. And after a few more trys the stator housing cracked. i did have a little water in the hull but not a lot(would a cracked stator housing cause water to get in the hull?)

i live in san jose, ca.

Is there anybody around the san francisco bay area that can help me with parts. or even another shop to get a second opinion.

I have already took the front cover off but thats it. Even if i were to do it myself i dont know what parts i will have to replace.

My guess is that you may need a replacement flywheel, replacement magneto stator, and possibly a replacement starter Bendix drive.

And a replacement for the cracked stator housing.

Those parts new would cost circa $850, per Babbitts

    4010320 STATOR,IGN,DFI $296.92
    4010168 FLYWHEEL-3 CYL PWC,DFI $237.53
    1201911 COVER,FLYWHEEL,ASM,DFI $77.26
    5811550 GASKET,FLYWHEEL COVER $14.84
    4012033 Bendix SUBSTITUTED BY 4012033 (4060119) $227.64

Good used parts should cost less, of course.

But you may not need everything on this list, since we don't yet know exactly what has been damaged.

kc44408, I asked this question because my Virage is leaking water from the stator cover, and I was concerned that maybe if cracking stator covers are a common problem on these, that's what might be wrong with mine too.

However, I investigated tonight before I began the process of removing my engine where my leak was coming from and it appears to be leaking between the cover and the "stator mounting plate" (item 33 in the pic below). You can see something orange where these two parts meet - I believe this is RTV or a gasket that's out of place.

I'm hoping to know more tomorrow when the engine it out of the craft.
