Foam in back of engine compartment

Anyone know what the foam at the back of the engine compartment is for on a speedster 200? I'd like to have my exhaust route through that area.

I think its there to take up space if the boat gets flooded. More foam is less volume of water. I don't think it'll make the boat float any more but it will keep the engine volume down.
