    2000 Virage 700 start/sop problem

Hi, I'm working on my friends 2000 Polaris Virage 700. I'm having troble with the start/stop switch. The switch will start the ski without a problem. Here's the weird thing, when the start/stop switch works, ( Engine shuts off when you hit the switch ) the ski runs like crap. It will hardly move. Now when the switch doesn't work, ( you hit the switch to shut the engine off it keeps running ) the ski runs like a bat out of hell but you have to pull the landyard to kill the engine!!! Anyone have any ideas??? I found a loose ground for the LR-505 ( start/stop controller ) & the CDI unit. I tighted it back up and placed all the fuses. Let me know if you got any ideas!!! Thanks!!!

Also what is the gray wire with a red stripe inside the electrical box?

    Welcome

Check the start/stop switch for dirty or corroded contacts.

Start with an ohm-meter on the wires for the switch (disconnect them for the test), see if it reliably switches from zero ohms to infinite as you press and release the button.

Make sure the black terminals and the LR module's metal tab measure zero ohms all the way to the battery negative post.
Anything 1.0 ohms or higher is a problem.

Cool, I'll check that tomorrow, thanks.

Ok, The start/stop switch was good, I took it all apart and everything looked good. Also Had a good ground at the black wires at the LR-505 & CDI units. I'm getting 14 + V from the stator also. I'm thinking that maybe the LR-505 could have a internal short. What do you think?

Is this a carburetor engine, or fuel injected?

If carburetor, then the LR module could well be the problem.

First check that all connections to the LR are clean and tight. If nothing shows, then try another LR-505

Try John Zigler for a used one, or Babbitts for new.

    More sources here.

Yah it's a single carb engine. All the connections are clean and tight so guess I'll try replacing the LR-505 unit. Anyone got a good one laying around?

LOL If it acts up again were just going to replace the LR-505, a local shop has a new one in stock for $138.00. EVERYONE, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!!

Glad to hear you are back on the water

The original LR-505 was part number 4010304
It was not very reliable, and has been superseded by LR-505 part number 4010648
4010648 was stock on the 2001-2004 carb'ed models

Babbitts sells the 4010648 for $119 plus shipping.
PartsPitStop lists the 4010648 for $107 (you have to look it up by part number)
