    98 GSXL Electrical Problems

    Hey all,

I have a 98 GSX Limited with no spark

How do i test the stator and coil and whatnot to find out whats broken? I have a multimeter but am not very keen with electronics.

    Thanks

    get new stator
the multimeter wont help you at all

  3. #3
It may not be the Stator at all

Excuse the caps, I copy-n-pasted this from my notes

947 MAGNETO and TRIGGER INDUCTIVE SENSOR OUTPUTS
    >>> WITH 6- PIN WIRE HARNESS P/N 295 000 136 CONNECTED TO MAG COVER CONNECTOR (and UNITS’ CONNECTOR DISCONNECTED)

TESTING MAGNETO FOR CONTINUITY OF COILS and GROUNDS

    >>> USING AND OHM METER IN 20 OHM LOW RANGE RESISTANCE SETTIING:

    YELLOW WIRES #1--#2=1.2 OHM
    YELLOW WIRES #1--#3=1.2 OHM
    YELLOW WIRES #2--#3=1.2 OHM

ALL YELLOW WIRES ----GROUND BOLT SHOULD BE “OPEN”,, NO GROUNDS….

    >>> RECONNECT UNITS’ 6-PIN WIRE HARNESS TO EXTENSION ON WIRE HARNESS TOOL

    >>> SET OHM METER TO 200VAC VOLTAGE RANGE

    >>> START ENGINE ON THE HOSE

OUTPUT FROM YELLOW WIRES (MAGNETO COILS) ARE AS FOLLOWS:

    YELLOW WIRES #1--#2=33~46 VAC
    YELLOW WIRES #1--#3=34~46 VAC
    YELLOW WIRES #2--#3=35~46 VAC
    (OR APPROXIMENTLY SAME VOLTAGES)

    TESTING INDUCTIVE TRIGGER SENSOR OUTPUT:

    >>> CONNECT TEST WIRE HARNESS TO MAG CONNECTOR and
    DISCONNECT UNITS 6-PIN MAG CONNECTOR

    >>> SET VOLTAGE RANGE ON METER TO LOW RANGE 20 VAC

BLACK/YELLOW STRIPED WIRE---WHITE WIRE=.48VAC TRIGGER SIGNAL WHEN ENGINE IS TURNED OVER

    >>> SET OHM METER TO LOW OHM RANGE

    BLACK/YELLOW STRIPED WIRE---WHITE WIRE=240 OHMS

If there is no Spark on *either* Plug then it's most likely the Inductive Pick-Up next to the flywheel that is damaged.

If it's just one Plug that isn't sparking then you either have a loose wire or a bad coil (rare)

You need a special Sea-Doo wire harness (tool) to tap into the Front Magneto Grey plug w/o cutting the wires to check for .5VAC on the White Wire to Black/Yellow Striped Wire while turning the Engine over to see if you have the Inductive Coil Trigger signal that fires the Coils.

Do you have a part number for the inductive pickup?

Learn to use the parts microfiche.

The Inductive Pickup is next to the Stator on the Magneto Cover / Oil Pump sub-section of your Model and year unit.

It looks like its part 6 on the microfiche "Sensor Assy - $90.99"

I took the cover off, and found that where id imagine there'd be a needle or something of the sort coming off of that piece, but it is essentially flat (and rusted)

Sound like the culprit before i shell out?

    Yep,

    That's it.....

.... and you might want to figure out how the water is getting in there to rust it or you'll be back again.

This ski was a salt water ski before i owned it, i put a brand new long block in it, and never ran it in salt water. There looked to be salt corrosion on it.

The stator cover (as well as the pickup) was reused from the old motor. When i put it back together im going to use some sort of sealant on that gasket (do you have any recommendations?) to help with that.
