99 xpl goes dead, completely!
Hi, we decided to put the ski in today in order to give it a last ride before the 4th. The ski started up great and rode for less than a minute before it totally went dead. No beep from the key no anything! My dad was riding the ski at the time it went totally dead. I have checked all of the fuses on the MPEM and they are fine. Is it a blown MPEM or ????? I'm pretty new to working on the ski so i will try and be as descript as possible.
Thankyou in advance: Oliver:

Check all your Ground wires / Cables for tightness and check the Magneto Plug (has an internal Ground Wire) on the Front of the Magneto Cover Plate. It is directly below the upper curve of the Black Exhaust Pipe.

so do i have to take the big plate off? i pulled the plug in out and sprayed it with WD 40. Checked the connection of the two wires running to the front of the magneto and they are both good.

I am going to start with the stupid questions first, have you checked the battery? A lot of problems can be caused by simple battery issues. Other than that what kind of riding was he doing was he putting when it killed out or was he thrashing around? Check all grounds, there are a couple up front on the stator cover (one bolt), one in the back of the motor behind the starter.

sounds like a bad rectifier...

We checked all grounds on the battery. He did a short burst at full throttle than began to turn at about 15mph and it died. What's a rectifier? All of the grounds have been checked they all seem in very good condition.

Your Rectifier is in the front Electrical (Grey Box).
If it has gone bad your electrical system is running completely off the Battery in "Total Loss" mode, that is, it's not charging the Battery. Even if it was a brand new fully charged Battery, and bad rectifier can take it down fast.
To check,,, Open up the Grey Box, disconnect the Red Wire to the small Rectifier module and put the box back together.
Run it on the lake no more than 10 minutes after verifying the Battery is FULLY recharged overnight on a trickle charger. NO more than 1amp....
If the problem goes away, re-connect the Red wire back onto the Rectifier and try again, if the problem comes back,, you found your problem. A new Rectifier is about $70...

Is the box black and plastic? Two wires running in one side? The wires are both red. . . .
