    forum newbie, 1st full rebuild

This forum is full of awesome info, thanks!

I was bored yesterday and come across a good deal on a couple ski's:

1997 Polaris SLX 785 PRO (other is a Kawi ZXi1100)

    Picked it up for $400
guy said it needed a top end () he got parts and tore into it and lost interest.
I could see minor cylinder wall damage and a need for new pistons immediately. I hate that I'm starting this project blind w/ it already tore down. I'm better if I tear it down myself so I know how to put it back together. Thank goodness for this forum hopefully you guys can help out w/ this clunker.

Not too bad on the outside but the inside is really ugly!!

Stand ( got the idea off a google search

well as you can see I got alot of work to do. I'm not sure where to start

I think I need to pull the engine out and clean up the hull real good, tear the engine down and clean it up and see what I got to start with.
How do I get the engine out?? LOL

    Welcome to the Hulk.

That's a hell of a deal you got there.

UNFORTUNATELY, I can't help but say you may want to consider getting a different engine for it, or part that out and make some $$ off it.

The reason I say that is, you're going to be putting alot of $$ into fixing that.

The cyls are nikasil plated, which is a special process that costs around $400 a cyl to plate. If any cyls are damaged, they must be re-plated.

A piston kit will run around $300 or more depending on the pistons you buy.

And you don't even know what else you might need to get her going.

OPTION A: Chopper901 has a stock engine he's selling for a good price, might be worth looking into getting.

OPTION B: Part that ski out, and make some $$$ from the parts. Then put that $$ towards another ski, hopefully in running condition.

I'm sure that's not what you want to hear, but you're looking at alot of $$$ to invest into that ski. They are going anywhere from $1800-2500 in running condition.

You'll be close to the $1800 mark, just getting the top end together on that ski. And you don't even know if the bottom end is good. That may be another $400-500 just for a crank rebuild.

    You can rebuild it
If you look around for parts you will find good used cylinders or have the rendone for around a 180.00 a cylinder ,pistons are around 80.00 each rings are 22.00 a piece ,wrist pins and bearings are 120.00 for all of them an aftermarket gasket set is around 120.00 and there may be few other tid bits you need but if you rebuild it you won't regret it they are awesome little ski's

You could try your luck on ebay for the parts.

First pull the pump ,pull the 4 LONG bolts and the steering cable bolt ,cotter pin for the trim and it's ready to pull then open the rlectrical box and remove the ignition stator wires that come from the motor ,remove the four motor mount bolts ,carbs and from the looks of it you should be ready .
    Any Other Just ASK
