    One idea:
one of your stator wires has rubbed in half. You need to do a "point A to point B" check of it.

Ward, it's kinda hard to tell you what to look for, when we don't even know what ski you have. I happen to have a mfd that doesn't show the rpms on a 97 sl780. On my ski the yellow wire from the stator feeds unregulated ac volts to the regulator while running, and that same yellow wire is used for the mfd to use the cycles to convert to rpms. My charging coil and wire is good, but the mfd is screwed up as it won't read that signal. That signal is also used to wake the mfd when the engine is started, and mine won't wake up till I press the mode button. It will go back to sleep even while the engine is running. i just have a messed up mfd.
Download the manual for your ski, and check the restistance values on the stator. Also check for 12 volts between blk and yellow at the plug connector at the mfd while the engine is off. If you have volts, and everything ohms out fine, get a new mfd.
