02 GTXDI runs a few seconds and shuts off
I have a 2002 GTXDI that will start and run smoothly for 5-20 seconds and then shut off. When this happens the instruments are blank with no reading.
The battery is new and strong, fully charged. The stator puts out >30 acv on all three legs at idle and are all three isolated from ground. The regulator is putting out 12.9 dcv at idle from a battery that is 12.6 dcv. The voltage at the battery when running at idle speed is 12.7 dcv and climbing when the engine dies.
The fuel pump runs the entire time the engine is running. When you pull the plugs they are wet with fuel.
With an inline spark tester I am not losing spark when engine stops. The engine is very difficult to restart but does spark. If you pull the tether, wait a few seconds (10) then reinstall the engine restarts easier, within a few revolutions.
The ecu has no failure codes displayed.
Anyone have a direction to go with this?

did you check the pump bearings?ive seen 2 in the last month that would stop dead,couldnt figure out why.come to find out pumps where shot and binding up.no noises either.one was an rxdi and the other was a gsx.might be worth a look...

I will check that. The part that seems like it wouldn't be the bearings is the fact that the guages are blank when it dies. This isn't normal until the tether is removed is it?

im thinking that its a short in your MPEM

see if you can lend a good rectifier and check again, could be overcharging a shutting down for protection

Can you set up another temporary earth lead from battery to engine ground so as to rule out the main earth lead.I think from memory the DIs have 2 earth leads but cant remember the exact details.Run it and then pull the temp earth lead and see if it stops.

Kaveman, I have a DI thats not running if you want to swap some parts. I also have two MPEMs although mine are for the XP DI. Its been a long time but I bought some R + D heasds for a GPR from you prob about two years ago. Do you have a BUDS system? I rebuilt the motor in mine and cant get the key to work. Waitting on a dess post.
