I need to change my ride plate

I dropped my jetboat to have the shift lever fixed as it's stuck in forward position. The mechanic noticed the ride plate looked ceroded and may need replacing. I'm wondering if I could replace it myself with a shop manual. Dealer said it's a 4hrs job so I wonder if it is real difficult. I just was layed off and just the rideplate repair is $785 parts and labor. Thanks
