  • Homemade Pressure Relief Mod

Thanks to Osidebill for helping me out finding the parts for this thing CHEAP. I decided to post this up to help others if they do not already know how to do this and send them to the proper website to get the parts.
    Go to http://www.mcmaster.com/
    Parts list:
    2 each =
5485K23 MED PRESSURE EXTRUDED BRASS HEX NIPPLE, 3/8" PIPE SIZE, 1-13/32" LENGTH

50785K37 MED-PRESSURE BRASS THRD PIPE FITTING, 3/8" PIPE SIZE, 90 DEG ELBOW

48935K35 BRASS ADJUSTABLE VACUUM/PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE, 3/8" NPT MALE, 0-20 PSI

The blue is the parts number. I put some pictures as you have to reverse the poppet on the valve (Thanks Bill )
The first pic shows how the setup is from factory. Then as you see I reversed the poppet onto the other side of the spring and whalla, pressure relief mod done for less than $45 shipped. Drill your 2 inch spacer and insert the straight pipe then thread in the rest of it and your good to go. I closed mine all the way as to let it pop at the max pressure of 20 psi.

Larry, why did you add the 90*. Seams like a lot of work for no advantage.
Are you counting on the added reverse thrust? Too much lift in the tunnel?

My ski use to buck at 75 mph. So I had the old style jetworks pump relief mod on there. Since I now I have that setup on my 07, I didn't want to spend $120 just on 2 jetworks valves. So I saw that BeerDart had done it this way and the pricing was way cheaper. I don't know about the 90* bend, I am assuming so that the water is pushed straight out the back and not up against the hull. I just did it the way BeerDart posted it up as it was a proven setup. Unfortunately I think I may not have tightened down the jam nut and lost both tips on my maiden voyage, hahaha.
I just figured while I had the 2" spacer out might as well get it done and over with as I am sure it was going to buck. But wondering if I really need it myself. As long as there is no buck and the ski does over 80, I'll be happy.

Really like the simplicity and everything but personally don't think those valves are going to flow much. The more volume the better and thats why I like the 3/8 jetworks at the very least. Those can't possible flow anywhere close IMO.. Bigger is always better. Also like to mount them further back for easier cleaning if trash gets stuck in the seat. Usually adel clamp them to the underside rear deck for easeir cleaning and inspection.

The valves and fittings are 3/8 NPT with an ID of .437. What is the ID of the 3/8 Jetworks?? .250ish

Looking at the outlet of those valves. I have 2 here. The inlet of the top right valve pictured is no where near .437. Top right picture is no where near .437. Also look at the outlet in the last picture. Thats way smaller then the Jetworks IMO. We must be talking about something other then pictured.

Also the 90degree brass fittings are majorly restrictive. I always use straight and sweep the 3/8 hose for better flow.

inlet and outlet of the valves I have that look just like the ones pictured is .185, the 3/8 jetworks is .315. Looking at the brass fittings pictured compared to the ID of the valves pictured looks about right to me.

If you dont angle the valve out of the back it will tear up the paint in the pump area.
