  • [Q] Ultra 250X Supercharger R&R

What is a reasonble dealer charge to R&R the supercharger?

I see the manual states engine removal in order to remove the charger . . . is that a 'must', or are there any other ways?

    Thanks

No u do not remove the engine to remove the charger think you read that wrong. It should not take a competent person more then 2 hrs total. It's easy

      What happened to your s/c?

There may be nothing wrong with s/c. I brought the ski into the dealer for a loud whine as it's still under warranty. Likely suspect for the whine is the s/c. Kawi authorized the dealer to start pulling parts to find the problem, but with the usual disclaimer that should they find rust/corrosion, they call it owner neglect, and now it's my tab.

Dealer wanted to put an estimate of $500 to cover their labor in case the claim was denied. They said they needed to pull the motor, which I thought was wrong, so I checked my manual. And Fire was right, I misread the manual. The section under s/c removal refered to the engine removal section, so I thought that meant 1st step is pull the motor. After actualy READING that section, the 1st step to pull the motor is to pull the exhaust and s/c out. LOL

So, the whole point of this thread was me trying to figure what my out of pocket might be if the claim was denied. I've taken care of the ski, and fogged the charger, but anything can happen.

So sounds like an hour to remove and an hour to replace is a reasonable estimate?

Yeah, I'm realizing I should have done some of this checking before I brought the ski in. But with little warranty time left, I just thought, eh, I'll just let the dealer figure it out. And there isn't much other choice in dealers for me.

Any guesses as to what's making the whine? Sounds like blower whine, just way louder. Can't hear the noise on the hose. Was only making noise when accelerating, or pinning the throttle. Holding mid throttle speeds didn't hear it.

are you real sure there is actually a problem the s/c is noisey at the best of times, as waz said check the bearings, whilst your at it leave the belt cover on the bench that way it will save you time later on when inspecting all to do with the s/c

I'm sure the noise isn't normal. I've had the ski since new, and it didn't use to be so noisy. We also have an 08 250X, and it's whisper quiet in comparison. The dealer had to river test in order to hear the noise, and they agree there's an issue.

And you're right about the belt cover, I should have had it off all along, easier to keep an eye out for rust.

I may end up having to pull the s/c, and just wanted to confirm the engine doesn't even need to be lifted as shown in the manual? All the exhaust and s/c bolts can be accessed with the engine still bolted down?

                Thanks.

Like i said the first time. U don't need to remove the engine.
                  Remove catch can
                  Loosen belt remove from sc
                  Remove tensioner bracket.
                  Remove Exhaust manifold /pipe
                  Unbolt sc
                  Pretty simple.
Only reason to unbolt motor is I'f belt was bad then u would need to to slide motor forward. You can also do the work with out removing exhaust manifold but it's gonna be a Paine that way unless you have really small hands or are familiar with where all the bolts are.

Heh, yeah, I figured you or waz might give me a hard time for asking that. But the little voice in my head said lifting isn't removing, exactly. I got as far as removing the manifold, except for that bottom center bolt. My Havasu tool set isn't that complete, so I have to pick up an offset wrench.

                    Thanks for your help.

Did you hear a very very subtle clicking noise from the ski along with the whine?

You don't need a off set wrench just a 12 mm slip your hand around the side put the wrench on from there. They can be on there good sometimes. But. Just takes some maneuvering

just done one in my workshop if its a 2007 ski with the crankcase breather box, its much easier to remove the s/c with the manifold off. i used an offset ring spanner and a 1/4 drive socket.

                            @Aqua: No, I wasn't hearing any clicking.

My 12mm wrench wouldn't fit, maybe an angled box would have worked, but mine was straight. Picked up an offset and it worked great.

My current (stupid) issue is I have the s/c unbolted, but I'm unable to wriggle it out of the ski. While trying to feed it toward the rear of the ski, it binds on either the water box or the head stud for the exhaust. Is there anything additional that needs to come out to make room?
