  • Kawa zxi 1100 - weird starting issue

    Hi everyone
bit lost here. New to kawa's
    zxi 1100 99 model

hitting red kill switch and ski won't spark/start.
switch off with magnetic key and starts every time.
hit red kill switch, no start/spark then switch magnetic key off/on and she starts

seems like once I hit red kill switch, it stays killed until reset with magnetic key.

    replaced start/stop
    rebuilt ebox

    Help me

    Welcome aboard, Mattyoc!

Do you have the wrist lanyard installed? It slides under the red kill switch. You can shut the engine off by pushing the button or yanking the lanyard out.

Before you ride it, be sure to carefully inspect the oil lines, assuming that you still have the factory oil injection system. They get brittle with age and split/crack. You want hoses that are supple and well secured to the nipples on the pump and carbs.

It would be a good idea to replace the bearings on the oil pump, too. There's an article here about how to do it.

One last thing, look on the electrical box and make sure the white plastic insulators on the wires aren't broken. I'd bet money that they are. It will run fine like that, but if you ever get water in the hull, you'll get water and corrosion in the electrical box. Silicone sealant will NOT fix them, they have to be replaced.

      thanks for the reply.
      oil Pump removed
      ebox rebuilt. Start stop replaced.

the issue is that once you press the start stop it won't start/spark again. it cranks just does not spark
if I stop with magnetic switch it will start every time.

feels like something (like a stop relay) is sticking. Switching off power via magnetic switch resets something and allows it to start/spark.

The kill switch can be temperamental. It has two modes of turning off the ignition; pushing the red button insert forward with the lanyard in place, or by removing the lanyard which allows the complete red button assembly to move forward. The Yamaha and Kawasaki lanyard clips look to be the same, but they are not. It's possible that you have a Yamaha lanyard that may be causing the problem. It's possible that your kill switch is bad--was it NEW when you replaced it? There is no 'stop relay', only a start relay. The engine is shut off by grounding the ignition module (hooking the black and white wires together).

Trace the wires from the stop switch for continuity. They should only be connected when the button is pushed or the lanyard is removed.
