  • 2012 Kawasaki Ultra 300LX issues with 93hrs

Hi Guys, new to this forum, but i done a bit of reading before posting. This is my second ski, first was a stx 15f
Bought the ski over a week ago without testing, i know this was a huge risk, but it was a good deal lol. Started up straight away, ran on hose, checked tilt/trim, oil etc. Yep i know you cant tell alot but thats how i bought it.
Anywat, ski came with full fuel tank and on first outing wouldnt pull over 6800 rpm and 74kmh, straight away my heart sank as i thought id bought a lemon, tried a few hard runs and this is all it would hit, boost was down too, on way back to ramp the idle was pretty low and oil pressure warning started....cry.
Following day i done a bit of reading and decided to check over the ski, called the Kawa dealer and ordered new plugs, filter and oil.
After reading through forums i decided to pull the supercharger idler assembly off and also the exhaust filter. The idler was pretty rusty and had some play in bearing so decided to replace this, but the tensioner worked well, the exhaust filter was not even there anymore, and looked like it had never been changed, have one on order but it wont be hear till after New Yrs.
Oil was pretty dirty and it took me 3 hrs to get the bloody filter off as it looked like it had been on a while.
At this point im thinkin this ski had never been looked after very well.
Spoke to previous ownerr about the fuel nd he told me he only used the ski 3 yimes over the year of ownership and always topped tank up after each use, so fuel was obviously no good, so drained 70 litres into cans and refilled with fresh 98.
BAck to the boat ramp at Matilda Bay and told kids to wait while i went to test, fingers crossed.
Took her out and done a couple of runs each time increasing speed. After a bit of a warmup i got into it, acceleration was so much stronger, initially hitting 7800 and full boost then dropping off at top end to 7200 - 7400. I recorded a top speed of 84kmph and 7450 rpm.
Decided to try a bit of freestyling to see how it felt with some hard turns etc and it felt nice, but noticed it was cavitting bad out the hole on hrd tuns.
Nek minut river cops show up and the lady officer who was obviously in a foul mood started lecturing me about freestyling in a none designated area.......i was in the middle of the bay litterally 2kms from shore at 6pm on the day before Christmas Eve, the waterways were dead.
Anyway i ended up with a ticket even after expalining id owned 3 large boats, 2 jetskis and knew the water rules and was just testing the ski.
I headed back to ramp and picked the kids up and spent approx n hr on water, alot of hard runs and used approx a 3rd of a tank of fuel, jesus these things chew on full noise. Best i could log was the 84kmph and 7450 rpm. Some cavitation on initial accel out of hole but it pulls bloody hard once hooked in.
I thought these skis were good for over 100kmph? Im thinkin either a faulty speedo sensor or somthin, im back out tomorrow so will try and get a few runs and record speed on my phone, i also read that the throttle cble may need adjustment, and clogged ICs?
The good thing is i had no more issues with the oil pressure warning and idle was alot better.
Any advice on what else to try would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

One other thing i noticed, it seems to lean to the left at low speeds and with me and my daughter on nearlt tipped over to left in the bay while turning right from stationary, if i hadnt turned into the tip and hit throttle the ski would of tipped over, i do weigh 123kg and my daughter is approx 60kg so maybe dont go slow lol

Sorry just noticed you mentioned the intercooler.
1st I'd put in a new set of plugs , you don't have to use genuine , they are expensive .
check the belt tensioner isn't seized , they usually need lubricating.
        Check the exhaust filter.
Probably wouldn't hurt to test the fuel system , at least do a prime test.
Hopefully the plugs will fix the issue.

As i stated in the post, ive checked exhaust filter, replaced the tensioner pulley and checked the tensioner, the plugs oil and filter have also been changed and drained the fuel and refilled with fresh.

Check the fuel line for flow.
Try removing the fuel lime from the fuel rail , and run the hose into the bottle and measure how.much fuel comes out when it primes.
When you put the key in the ignition the pump primes for about 3 seconds.
              Check the amount.

I think a 3 second prime should be about 83ml

Is the ski stock with a limiter ?

I have no idea if stock or with limiter, considering im hitting 7800 rpm out the hole then approx 7400rpm at top end and speedo is showing 84kmh does this sound correct?

The entire exhaust filter disc was missing?

If it was not where it is supposed to be, it may now be lodged inside the waterbox, possibly restricting exhaust flow and reducing engine power.

Yep, upon removal the housing for filter had nothing inside. I will have a look at the waterbox tomorrow. Cheers

Heres a bit of an update -

Went out today and spent 3hrs on water using a full tank of fuel, bout 75 litres.
Initially the ski was cutting out everytime i came off the throttle at speed, almost like the motor was being stalled. It got better as day went on then started doing it again, started straight back up, but seemed the water flow through the pump was stalling motor as only done it at speeds over 30 kmhr.

Tested the top speed on speedo with an app on my Android phone and top speed on clock was logged at 81kmh but phone logged 96kmh so obviously some issues with sensor or clock. Still wont go over 7200 rpm at top end, its almost like the ecu is pulling revs. Fuel was 98 octane.

Not sure if im hearing and feeling a small vibration thru the hull or im being paranoid, only seems ta hppen if cruisiing at certain revs.

Ill pull the IC and waterbox off and check for blockages tomorrow and maybe pull the fuel pump out and check filter.

Forgot to mention also when i done oil and filter i had to much oil in it and used it for an hr on water last ime before sucking some out to correct level, then went out today and had these problems, could the oil have made its way into IC or airfilter?

There is a factory speed limiter , when mine would hit top speed of 108ks the speed limiter would drop the revs back from 7800rpm to 7200 rpm.
Is the jet pump in good condition ?
You said it felt like it was cavitating.
Trying to determine if it is a engine or pump issue.

If your filter was completely missing there is a possibility that it is stuck in your water box.
                              Like in this pic.

I have taped a old iPhone on a metal rod and put it down the water box inlet side of a friends ski to check as his filter was missing.
It was stuck like in this pic. Click image for larger version
