  • Skat Trak dual impeller

    Hey All.
    Just a quick question about the Skat Trak dual impeller. I got the correct impeller using the chart for my 2004 Seadoo GTX 185hp SC 4TEC. The impeller comes as a three part unit. The nose screws into the small impeller which screws into the larger impeller. My mechanic installed it with a new wear ring, and on my first run, something let loose.
    I milked it back to the dock, and when we pulled open the pump section, the hull was pretty full of water, and the nose section had ripped off the small impeller section. The mechanic mentioned it was probably because the shaft was rusty and the nose caught on it an pulled off the nose?
    Anyhow, the small and large section of the impellers look ok and there is a slight groove in the wear ring, but the nose was ripped out of the smaller impeller section destroying the threads in the nose, and the threads in the small impeller look "flat". They are uniformly flat, so the mechanic thinks they came that way, but I do not want to put this thing back together if that is incorrect.
    1. Does anyone know if I can buy the individual pieces?
    2. Does it make sense that the nose would let loose because of a rusty shaft?

    Check to make sure you did install the cap and small impeller backwards....

    Okay, I am not an expert about this, but let me tell my recent experience.

    I have two seadoo's a 2012 wake 155, and a 2015 260 rxt-x, I installed myself SKat Trak dual impellers myself on each one, and I was meticulous about following the instructions and using the correct spline tools and torque.
    And both worked great and were huge improvements in performance.

    NOW for the Horror story:

    ON a recent trip, to florida, I had an issue with my newer 260 RXTX involving a steering cable, I took the machine to a very reputable, timely mechanic, who was able to fix that in 24 hours, he noted that I had not had wear ring replaced on it yet (only 70 hours on the machine, and really no issue), however It sounded like a good idea, so I had him do that too. He took the jet pump off and removed the install dual impeller and replaced the wear ring. The next time that I took it out, it was running fine, however all of sudden, I lost power and heard a funny sound. After returning home, I noted that both of the front little cap screw, and the small front impeller had spun loose and spun there way up the driveshaft. What was worse was that the small impeller drove into the fiberglass hull and "routered" out a moonshape hole right through the hull, creating a dime sized opening into the craft.

    But wait it gets worse: somehow, it also pull on the driveshaft when this all occurred and misaligned the driveshaft with the bigger impeller and sheared all the splines on both the driveshaft and the splines on the main impeller.

    After taking it all apart, it finally dawned on me that the mechanic who replaced my wear ring, inadvertly installed the smaller impeller and also it cap backwards, so that with the turning of the driveshaft, it unscrewed these two sections, and thrust the small impeller backwards toward the front of the craft.


    SO:
    I am currently buying a new driveshaft, and for now not planning on using the dual impeller, because I have the original


    Side note, I noted that when you assemble all three parts of the impeller together, it actually appears like it is installed correctly because the main and small impellers do not appear flush at the edges they touch, however when installing backwards, it almost appears to be a more flush fit.

    My only question to you would be, what do you think the source of the water in the hull was from?
    Also, I would highly recommend that you closely inspect the small impeller and how it was installed, it could still be possible, that it is installed backwards, and has not yet unscrewed itself lose

    in regards to the flat grooves on the small cap, both of mine came that way.

        okay more updates, after getting it all tore apart, I do know that the mechanic installed the small impeller on backwards, however that wasn't the complete reason it spun off... In that both sides of that impeller have the exact thread direction pattern, in thibking about it, I think he did not torque it correctly, probably because he did not have the special tighten hexx that it came with.

        Also, in regards to the spines on the impeller, it was 90%, ground down, the driveshaft itslef was very minimal wear, however I replaced as well because I already purchased, take a look

        Finally got the machine out again today and running good, however very noticeable difference without the dual inpeller, cavitation very noticeableClick image for larger version

          I am glad you are up and running again! I am as well. On mine, it turned out that the nose cone came loose, went up the shaft causing cavitatin. I am very impressed with the Seadoo and the impeller.
