  • New MSX 110 - not revving

I just picked up a seemingly nice 2004 MSX 110. I've spent hours in the forums researching, but thought I'd throw my question out to the group. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Hours, 140 - I believe its sat for a while.
Oil on dipstick is clean, fill level right at max, maybe a hair over
    Coolant is pink and clear
On trailer out of water in garage rev's high in forward,
in water (on trailer at ramp), starts, idles, doesn't rev. In reverse, it's pushing water but very litle if any throuttle in forward or reverse.
Compression is roughly 120 on both cylinders
At ramp, there was oil floating on surface
Started again in garage, it revs, and sprayed a milky oil mix on floor out of exhaust.

The oil in exhaust is concerning, but my coolant is still clear, and my oil in tank isn't milky, so I'm ruling out a head gasket. I can't rule out an overfill at some point (no history) so maybe it's fouled my air flow sensor(s)? could it be the throttle body? something turbo related?

Any ideas on the no rev situation in water. I was glad to see it didn't rev high in water, but disappointed it didn't rev at all.

    Welcome.

    Where are you located.

I'm in a Milwaukee Wisconsin suburb, since I posted, I pulled the hose and looked in my intercooler. I can see oil coating inside, must have been overfilled at some point. Not milky like a headgasket mayo, but fresh oil covering. My guess is it's getting sucked in and coating the MAP sensor(s) and is throwing it into limp home mode. I'll see how hard it is to pull the intercooler and clean it

Sounds like the oil is overfilled to me. You want it at the low mark on the dipstick.

I think you're right. I did some more inspection and found the air intake box, hoses to intercooler, Intercooler, and hose to upper intake with Map sensor very oily. The turbo is not oily, and there's no horizontal play. I plan to clean it all up, drain some oil out to get it right, drop two new MAP sensors in and see how it goes.

I am also suspicious of my throttle body or PPU. I'm going to officially perform the relearn, but I noticed with hoses off, when I could see the butterfly that it was only opening maybe an 1/8 of an inch when ignition was on and I squeezed the throttle. I pulled the lanyard to shut it off, manually opened the butterfly with my finger, (under tension but smooth). Put the lanyard back in, pressed start to turn it on, and the butterfly is in perfect synch with the throttle, but after pulling the lanyard, and trying again, I'm back to 1/8 inch. every time I turn off and manually operate the butterfly, it works when I turn it back on. Hopefully the relearn will make it work consistently? Any ideas here? bad Throttle body? PPU interface? or ??

I went through this crap on an MSX150 a while back but I could never get the throttle blade to move any more than that 1/8"......even after multiple attempts at a relearn. Finally bought the updated PPU off ebay that doesn't have the interface and it worked fine.

It's weird, I now have a repeatable issue that I'm not sure how to solve. Every time I try to observe the butterfly / throttle action it's the same thing. I blip the starter, and the butterfly only opens an 1/8 inch. If I do the relearn, it works perfectly and keeps working perfectly until I pull the lanyard. then it's Back to an 1/8 inch. Relearn, restart... i'm good again.

So I know it can work, but it's un-reasonable to have to relearn the ECU every time you turn it off / pull the lanyard. It's almost like it's not saving the calibration or something. I miss a cable : -)

              Thoughts ?

Do you have a CEL (overheat for example)? If so, try unplugging the exhaust temperature sensor.

It sounds like you have a failed ppu. It’s common there is an upgrade replacement on eBay for it.

just an update.... i took the path of thinking I had two issues.... 1.) the PPU issue which i solved with the upgraded unit off of ebay, and 2.) Oil overfill - I cleaned the intake track including intercooler, replaced map sensors and removed about a half quart of oil. I towed it to Destin FL from Wisconsin last week and it ran super well. It hung really well with my 2017 Yamaha VX maybe not quite as fast, but a smoother ride. pleased with my purchase..... now on to some cosmetic fixes and a reflashed ecu....
