  • What causes '04 Genesis (Ficht) to blow a cylinder? Possible purchase...

    Hey guys,

Found a 2004 Genesis locally for $750 (with trailer), and am tempted to buy it. Motor blew the #1 piston and bent the rod, so will need bottom end, jug, piston, etc. 2 questions:

    1. What is the most likely cause of that type of catastrophic failure, and
    2. Is this a good deal? how much are used parts for these?

Haven't been around a Genesis yet, my old '93 SL750 is a little simpler than these newer beasts...

    Thanks!

Is this a fuel injected or carburetor engine?

The Polaris red engines are not really any more 'complex' than the old Fuji engines, just a little different.

Why did it fail? You might be able to tell more when you take it apart.

The most 'common' cause for mechanical engine failure is simply accumulated wear from high engine hours or rusting inside the engine due to moisture ingress.

If the engine was ever flooded/sunk and not properly and promtly dried out then the crank bearings can begin to rust. After that it is only a matter of time until it fails.

I am just outside Kintyre, ND. Ski is located nearby. This is a Ficht fuel injected model. Seller states

Needs lower end due to number 1 rod bent, and number 1 piston and jug.

... ski is in really nice shape just needs a new engine. Have engine out and apart...
Full engine rebuild or buy a ready to install rebuilt engine.

If the fuel injectors have not been marked with which cylinder they came from, that can be sorted out.

It is possible the EMM will need repair at some point. Since the engine failed mechanically perhaps you can assume the electronics are still good.

Expect to go over the rest of the machine. Check everything, do the recommended maintenance and upgrades.

Fuel pump pressure regulator reinforcement is mandatory, if not done already. Not a difficult job on a Genesis.

I'd suspect a busted crankcase as part of the carnage, which depending on where it broke it may not be repairable. So plan on the cost of a replacement case as well.

EDIT: I see the ad mentions that the engine is out, I'd still ask about the crankcase...

Okay, thanks for all the comments! Went and looked at the ski today. It's in really nice shape overall, trailer is decent. It's an '01 not an '04, and will need either a complete engine, or complete bottom end and one jug. Picked it up for $700, but as I'll do the work myself I don't think that was too much. Now to start shopping for parts... Anybody got some spares laying around? lol

              Thanks guys!
