  • 2000 Virage Will NOT Shut OFF!

I have a 2000 Virage 2 Cyl.... It does not respond to the Lanyard Pull and will NOT turn off power to the ski. The only way to shut down the machine is to hit the "Start/Stop" button (it will turn the machine off), but the Power remains "ON" to the machine. Disconnecting the Battery is the only way to turn the unit off - before the battery drains the machine.

    Any Help???

    Welcome to the Hulk

    Carburetor engine, correct?

I suspect the LR Start/Stop module MAY have gone bad. You can bypass the LR module for testing. See my signature links for details.

What concerns me is that the lanyard switch is not shutting down the engine. Switch may be bad, or the wires to the switch and CDI, or the actual CDI ignition module is ignoring the kill signal (which seems the least likely possibility in this case).

The more common complaint is that the lanyard function is working as expected by the Start/Stop button is not.

Note that it is normal for MFI display/clock to remain visible all the time. It enters a low power sleep mode after five minutes of no activity but the clock stays visible.

I was unable to locate the section in your Signature links that show me how to bypass the LR for testing. Can you point me to that, please. And ... How do I diagnose the Lanyard Switch? Is it possible that these are two independent problems?

Lanyard switch: It is indeed possible for there to more than one problem happening at the same time. In fact, compounding factors is often the thing that makes people confused when attempting to make a diagnosis. Never assume there is one problem, and only one problem.

That said, use your checks, measurements, tests and diagnostics to lead you to the real problem cause. Don't assume you already know what is wrong and then attempt to 'prove yourself correct'.

You can ohm test the lanyard switch once you unplug the wiring harness connector.

I Ohm tested the Lanyard Switch and it tested properly. Open with Lanyard... Closed without it. I opened the "Brain" (control unit) and it looked ... modified. I have attached a picture. BTW - I recently purchased the machine. So, I have NO knowledge of any early Mods to the Brain. What do you recommend?

Also... the Gray/Red wire (out of the photos frame) is NOT attached to anything.

And... its magical! Took it apart... tested many contacts... put it back together... and everything works like a champ! Now I have a New Problem. Revers Shifter has broken. Spins freely. I have ordered a complete replacement from Ebay. Probably a good idea to replace filters while I am working on it.

See my thread regarding binding of the Virage/Genesis/MSX reverse lever. You may need to repair and lubricate the replacement before installing it.
