There are TWO gray wires from the CDI, not just one. The Gray wire with bullet connector is for the stator and must be connected.
The gray wire with spade terminal connects to the Gray (or TAN on non-diode boards) connection on terminal board.
Looking at the 2001 Virage TX wiring diagram, the Gray/Red wire is for the Reverse limit switch, via a diode on the terminal board. Tan wire is via another diode, both feed into the Gray wire to the CDI for RPM limiting.
Gray/Red also connects to the MFI display for Reverse Mode warning.
You can bypass the LR-Start/Stop module to see if that is interfering with something. Details via my signature links.
