  • MFD Acting Weird

My MFD for my Polaris SL780 is currently displaying ddd dAAA and the fuel and oil gauges are on as well. I have tried unpluging the batter for a minute to reset the microprocessor and that did not work. Holding the buttons down on the MFD do nothing for me. I can show a picture of what is exactly being displayed tomorrow if need be. Is there something I need to do to program it to start working again?

Also, the engine was running fine, and all of a sudden it starts to bog down when I try to give it throttle. Will be rebuilding the carb soon.

      Welcome.

Disconnect the MFD plug on the rear of the MFD. Leave it unplugged. Does the engine now start and run properly?

If yes, leave the MFD unplugged for a long time, more than 10 minutes. When you later plug it back in, does it work properly?

So this morning I disconnect the MFD in the back, engine still bogged down when giving throttle. MFD now does not show any display now, but the red light on top is lighting up. Not sure what changed overnight for the display to not be working.

So here is what the MFD looks like, just
got it up again after getting a new battery. My idle is a little low right now, going to turn up the idle screw. But I am having troubles when giving it some throttle. It starts to bog down when giving throttle. The battery is at 13.1 volts when the engine is running. Not sure if that would be a stator issue or what? If so would that also cause the bogging down of the engine when trying to rev it? Where do I start diagnosing a stator problem?

Unplug the MFD connector from the MFD back side. Leave it unplugged for more than ten minutes. Then reconnect the MFD connector and see if it starts up normally. After a few seconds if display is still blank press a front panel button, see if it responds.

Do not reply upon the MFD voltage display when diagnosing battery voltage issues. Always use an external volt meter (multi-meter) connecting to the battery posts to measure and monitor battery voltage.

The MFD voltage reading can be inaccurate and should not be relied upon until compared to an accurate meter. There is a calibration method which can correct the MFD voltage display to be semi-accurate.

After unplugging the MFD the engine ran a lot better. What does this mean? The voltage readings I mentioned above were measure with a DMM, not the voltage displayed on the MFD.

It could mean the MFD not working properly, is causing an internal problem with wires connected to stator.
If it stays lite up the way in your pic and never changes, its bad.

Batteries , even new and under charged will draw alot from the charging system.
From 12.6v up to 13.1 shows its trying to charge. At higher rpm's it charges better. These charging systems are not that strong. Deffinetly not as strong as a car with 40lb alternator.

So could the MFD be thing that made my previous battery die? I have left the battery out and unplugged in fear of killing my new battery. I have not measured the voltage while it is running with the MFD unplugged yet.

probably not, the MFD uses very little power.
Lead acid batteries just dont last long in PWC. Lucky to get 1 year from Walmart batteries.

Hmmm, good to know. So is 13.1 volts too low for charging do you think? It gets up to around 13.5-13.6 when at higher RPM's.
