  • No Spark 2001 Polaris Virage

Picked up a 2001 Polaris Virage today off FB with a trailer in good shape for 500 not running. I know the guy that posted it, and he told me he originally bought the ski for the trailer it came with, and ended up keeping it and picking this single trailer up that went with the ski. Anyway, he told me that it isn't getting spark, and he didn't want to mess with it.

I suspect that it is the CDI or the Stator, but wanted to see what you guys thought.

The brown wire coming from the CDI, I have 9v, which is what it should have if I am correct. I am not sure if that means the CDI is working or not.

I ohm tested the coil and it ohm tested good.

Moving on to the stator testing, I ran out of time during my lunch today and didn't get a chance to tinker with it this evening. I had tested some of it, but I had not got to finish everything.

Black to ground was 0 ohms
blk to purple was 7.5 ohms if I recall correctly, which manual states it should be 5.5, not sure if this is an issue or not, manual doesn't state any +/- tolerances.
Hall sensors red and green wire with a 9v battery both show 106 ohms which manual states should be 25 ohms or less.

I also seen some issues regarding other things like the start/stop switch on these, but my trim works and it tries to start...not saying the switch is good but I seen some people say it wouldn't stay running without holding the button, or only when they turned the pump on and I tried that with no change.

New to skis, but not new to working on quads/bikes..etc

What does ‘it tries to start’ mean?

Does it simply crank the engine with no signs of actual fire, or does it puff exhaust and sound like there is some ignition happening?

These engines require a really strong battery. Measure the battery voltage while cranking the engine.

You really want the battery voltage during cranking to stay above 11.0 volts, and the absolute lowest voltage at the battery while cranking must stay above 10.6 volts

Holding in the bilge pump button should run the bilge pump.

Holding the Bilge button down while cranking overrides the LR module switched Orange wire (accessory output). This forces battery voltage to the CDI module, should your CDI be powered by the Orange wire. There was a Service Bulletin that revised how the CDI was powered, which eventually became the factory configuration. Holding the Bilge button down while cranking ensures that the CDI is getting full battery voltage regardless of which wiring configuration your CDI has

Sorry, I should have clarified that. Tries to start as in engages the starter. Still no spark of anything different.

battery is junk, but using my jump box, has 13v while cranking.

Using an external jumper pack connected to the ski can create voltage spikes that can damage the CDI electronics.

Especially if the installed battery is very weak or not even connected.

This is why it is recommended to install an actual good battery of appropriate size. No jumper cables or externally connected battery.

13 volts while cranking also seems rather high.

You will fry that cdi with a jumper
what engine is in it 700, 1200?
have you taken off the stator cover? To check for water intrusion thats the big killer on the stators
