  • SL900 with update , wont fire up.

Hey guys i picked up a SL900 that ran in the driveway , stuffed it in the boat and it fired up .
brought it down to the water and it started 3 times but needed the idle turned up so would die without foot on the gas.

It started making a horrible noise on the 4th try and would not start again like i blew the starter so back home and i am swapping starters and then the bendix to no avail.

i realized when i removed the bendix the flywheel nut was not really tight and the flywheel needed no pulling just came off, i asumed when he put in the updated stator he must not have torqued it on because after i torqued it it started to engage the starter and turn over nicely.

But now it wont start ,i have spark on all 3 plugs battery is new all 3 carbs are getting fuel ,even adding some directly into the carb does nothing, maybe something got damaged?

I am going to pull the flywheel again to see if the stator is ...loose? but now the flywheel is on tight and i got to find a puller that will fit, when i spin it it doesnt seem to be contacting anything but it comes very close some wires.

any help would be appreciated i am out of ideas and looking for a rope

What did you do about the woodruff key that indexes the flywheel to the crank snout?

If the woodruff key is missing or sheared the engine ignition timing will be wrong.

+ 1 . Sounds as if the keyway was atleast damaged. After you get flywheel off, inspect the small timing ring, should have 1 magnet.

In picture, there is a barrel type connector not connected. There shouldn't be any extras, it needs to be connected.

There was a small peice of metal that came off with the flywheel i stuffed it in the groove when i put it back on , hopefully thats where it was supposed to go.

I found i had no spark on the center cylinder ,while going over everything and found that connector unplugged .plugging it in gave me the spark back i thought that was the ticket... but still no start.

if these run with no spark on one cylinder it was probably like that when i bought it ,probably why it was being sold, after doing the CDI and Stator then finding no spark on the center he probably threw in the towel to get some money back rather then track another problem down. I cant even imagine the pain it must be doing the stator while in the Hull.

so maybe the timing is all clustered cause this thing was starting

Alright i have the Flywheel off . chasing my tail on the long weekend trying to get
this thing going made me forget my manners ,messed up times we are in i hope everybody is keeping well.

This woodruff key looks about the same as when i last saw it..maybe a bit shorter? there are no loose little bits.
when i put it back together before i just stuffed it in the grove or channel cause it seemed to fit

that fly wheel key is junk its not even half of what it should be....second judging by wire color and size and black coating on stator wires thats a aftermarket stator and is probably junk. I just did a 900 same thing...had spark but was weak but wouldnt start at all.....got it to back fire. Replaced the aftermarket junk stator with oem and it fired right up

There appear to be metal shavings on back side of flywheel at center, on and around the plastic timing adjuster.
There should be a rectangular opening in the plastic, that holds the magnet for timing. I can't really see that clearly.

The stator wires are WAY too close to bendix. The aftermarket seems to make that wire length too long and expect installer to tighten that up, to avoid flywheel cutting those wires.

Thanks for the input i thought that key was kind of small , the flywheel seemed to be holding on pretty good.

those oem stators seem to be very $$ ill have to use this one till i am sure its dead

I cant see any magnet in the rectangular hole

well at least its in a boat and not a pwc hull because you will be pulling that flywheel off and replacing that stator they are utter junk....Looks to be the exact sbt junk i just threw out off the 900 i got the other day and it was brand new.

well i thought they were legitimate questions tell me somethings broken is nice n easy.

I had never heard of that WF key .i thought that sliver i had was mostly it it was in a wedge shape . Mechanic i asked said there should be a notch in the shaft , i am like nope its smooth, turns out the woody broke off super clean and not being aware its a have moon shape i didnt know to look for it, in the pic it looks like an embedded magnet or something

I did a stator swap on my 750 and never noticed it then either i just got super lucky putting it back together i guess cause it ran i just went and looked and it is still embedded in the shaft in good shape.

I doubt you can even buy just one you have to drop 30 or whatever on a whole kit luckily my work has a shop and they were able to shoot me one.

Super bitch getting the flywheel over it but it went .

and if you think the stator wire was close to the Bendix it was even closer to the teeth on the flywheel i had to put the rubber grommet on the outside to get the wire out and seal it with silicon.

So she still wont fire i was hoping the flywheel was slipping with Woodruff sh*tting the bed and all I had to try.

when i said there was good spark it was because i have these inline testers although kinda old now they do light up.

anyway ill leave you with this
