  • Tuning Tips All Engines/Carbs

Thank you for the purchase of a Pulse Pet-2100DX digital tachometer.

I've put together a "Quick Start" manual to help the first time user get up and running in no time.

The whole key to the operation of this tachometer is the "MODE" button.

To change the setting example, from 2-stroke 2 cylinder (P22:44) to 2-stroke 3 cylinder (P23:46). Press the "MODE" button until only numbers appear in the display, such as P22:42 or P23:46.

To change to different types of motors press the "SET" button.
You will want it to read P22:44 for 2-stroke twin cylinder, most 2-stroke 3 cylinder triples use the 23:46 mode

    21:42 = Single cylinder
    22:44 = Twin cylinder.
    23:46 = Triple cylinder.

    Using the basic tachometer

Once you have clipped the antenna lead to a spark plug wire and brought up the correct mode required using the directions above, you are now ready to monitor running and peak rpm.

You may also measure Rpm's by simply holding the unit near the spark plug wire.

Remember: This tachometer is ÔÇ£water resistantÔÇØ not completely waterproof and it is your responsibility to protect your investment. Please protect it from submersion if possible. We recommend using clear plastic ÔÇ£shipping tapeÔÇØ to attach it to your watercraft. The best method to remove tape adhesive from the face is ÔÇ£WD-40ÔÇØ, other chemicals might damage the case.

    Using the hour meter.

This unit has a built in hour-meter for both total and temporary time. Press the mode button to display the hour-meter. You can toggle between total and temporary time by pressing the "SET" button. You can also chart the temporary time by pressing both the "MODE" and the "SET" button at the same time. This can be a very important feature for breaking in race motors or by knowing the actual running time on the motor.

Using the Max RPM recall feature

Once you have made a run, you can recall the maximum RPM recorded.
Again, press the "MODE" button until a small black mark appears on the top left side of the display. The highest RPM will appear in the display. To clear this for the next run, press the "SET" button on the right side of the tach. On certain motors, when the engine is first fired, the MAX RPM may be extremely high and inaccurate, push the "SET" button to clear this out.

Using The "TWIN MAX" RPM Feature

You can compare both your MAX RPM from the last run and your current RPM, fide by side at the same time. Press the "MODE" button until you see Twin Displays. The left number is your MAX RPM and the right number is your current RPM. You need to take this number times 100 to obtain actual RPM. For example 80 actual is 8,000 RPM. To clear this MAX RPM, just hit the ÔÇ£SETÔÇØ button. The dual mode will not read in 10 rpm increments and isn't recommended for tuning purposes.

30-Day warranty. Please save a copy of the purchase receipt for your records.

                          Tuning Tips for Girls

                          THANKS RANDY!!!

Start with the screws set at 1 turn out, and tune with the tachometer for peak Rpm, then stop there and count the number of turns on the high speed screws. Write this down on a piece of paper.. Then turn the high speed screws in all the way and open them to 1/4 turn open. (Now you will be testing starts only, so no more big high rpm trips around the course). You are only turning in the high speeds to allow you to easily tune the low speeds.

Now check the low speed screws and set them at 1 turn and do a practice start; To test the low speed setting pretend that you just jumped the start and you have to start with no holder. Hold the ski by yourself and hold as many Rpm as you can (don't blow it out first for testing) and then nail the throttle hard.... NO FARTHER THAN 50 FEET, as you are only testing the start response

If it blubbers like a schoolgirl trying to guzzle a quart of beer, then it's too rich on the low speed screws..
If it falls flat on the line (like someone punched you in the stomach).. It's too lean on the low speed screws.

When you like the acceleration off the line, stop there and count the number of turns on the low speed screws. Write this down on a piece of paper.. Then re-set your high speed screw where they show the best peak Rpm earlier and try both a start and a peak Rpm run...
It will probably "blubber" a little off the line... DO NOT turn in the low speed screws... Instead, go back out on the course and fine tune for peak Rpm again.. The blubbering off the line is caused by having too much fuel in the high speed circuit... Write down your new high speed setting on the piece of paper along with the best low speed setting that you found earlier, this will be your base-line carburetor settings.
If the high or low speed screws are open more than 11/4 turns, then you need to swap to the next bigger jet.
If the high or low speed screws are closed all the way, then you need to change to the next size smaller jet.

*** If no matter what you try, it still won’t leave the line without falling on its face "lean bog"... Then try the next size lower pop-off spring in the carbs... Don't be afraid to try #95 or even #80 gram springs..
Matrix-two of them, because sometimes one just won't do.
