I noticed a discrepancy between K,s cable diagram and the one from the 2003 manual.
K is jumping 1,4,6 and 7,8 on the 9 pin serial and the manual is jumping 1,4,9 and 7,8. Does it matter?

The manual page posted doesn't actually say how all the W wires are actually interconnected.
W(pin-1) W1(pin-4) W2(pin-9) W3(pin-8 ) and W4(pin-7) suggests the white wires are all linked together, which is unlikely in this case.
I would need to dig back into my notes to see why I chose the wiring diagram I did. Lemme poke around and get back to you...
Update: Looks like the 2003 Service manual diagram is slightly incorrect, swapped pin 6 with pin 9, methinks.
I believe this is a photo of a genuine Polaris SPX diagnostic cable.
Black would be pin-5 (signal ground)
Looking at the connector from the back,
Pin-9 in the adjacent row is empty, no connection (this makes sense, given the RI function does not apply here)
Pins 7 and 8 are linked together, but not to the other white wires.
Pin-1 is linked to pins 4 and 6.Last edited by K447; 07-28-2014, 03:10 PM.Comment

Big Thanks to K for this informational "How-To" thread!
I used a 6ft null modem serial DB9 cable to make my cable. On the null model cables... the 1 & 6 pin are already linked... so made the jumpers easier. The individual wires are small on my cable... like 28AWG... talking LAN cable wires small. So I soldered all my plug pins. I used the square WeatherPack 4 pin on my cable since I'm hooking up to an MSX 140.
I had to dig around to figure out how to get it all hooked up right. Guess I'll outline the steps here in case someone else is looking. You won't need to start the ski (my engine is apart)... nor will this process even prime the fuel pump (unless you run that test in Digi Wrench).
Here's what I did:
- start up Digital Wrench
- ensure a good battery is hooked up
- unplug the 8 wire connector from the EMM. In this connector you just unplugged from the EMM... jumper pins 1 & 7 (red/purple <> white/red)... I used a short U-shaped piece of 14AWG solid copper wire.
- find the diagnostic connector in the harness (near battery) with the lone wire attached to the "cap" (other side of the plug) and pull it apart.
- plug in the main cable connector (from the computer)... the female-looking WeatherPack with the male pins in it... to the main diagnostic connector plug.
- then plug in the single-wire connector (off the computer cable)... the male-looking WeatherPack with the female pins in it... to the single-wire "cap" of the diagnostic connector you just unplugged.
- lastly insert the lanyard.
Digital Wrench should go from "Not Connected" to "Connected". Now your ready...
Worked great for me.

USB to Serial Adapters with Prolific Chip
If you're utilizing a USB to Serial Adapter that utilizes a Prolific chip set (check the adapter properties in the Windows "Device Manager" tab located within the 'Systems" tab of Control Panel) and it will not communicate with Digital Wrench (DW), check the driver version in the aforementioned adapter properties tab.
I just ordered a CompUSB.com adapter (I like the comm LEDs) as my StarTech adapter would not work with DW. Neither did the CompUSB adapter initially.
I first installed the CompUSB adapter and let Windows 7 automatically obtain the driver via Windows Update. It didn't work.
I then installed it utilizing the installation program that came on the CD with the adapter. It didn't work either. I noted both drivers had old release dates. I didn't find any driver support pages on CompUSB.com web page, but I did find such at Prolific's web page:
The current version of the driver at the time of this post is: 3.6.81.357.
The StarTech adapter utilizes a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset.
I also updated it to the current version, 6.7.2.0, but it still would not function with DW.
