  • 717 swap in 90 GT

I love 90s SeaDoo's and miss my others. So this popped up and had to pick it up. A 90 GT for 250 with a tore apart motor that the owner was going to replace the starter then lost interest. The hull is in good shape and I always wanted the original GT. I was just going to get a new yellow 587 to replace the old motor, but I was thinking of since it's already tore apart, what is needed parts wise to replace the yellow 587 with a 717?

You'll want the 717....including all bolt on stuff AND the electrical system AND the impeller. Best bet is to buy a complete 717 powered Gti or Gts as a donor.

Thank you for the reply. I have been looking like crazy including trying to piece it together if need be. I am finding nothing but decent hulls but blown motors vs bad hulls and good motors.

You COULD run the old electrics on the 717 BUT, the timing curve and max rpms are way off. You definately do NOT want to use the 587 exhaust.

Thanks, it would be better to run the gray box from a 717 I understand. I found a bunch but couldn't tell if the came with the stop start button which I heard you need, correct?

Well good news! I found a 96 GTi as a doner. Good motor, I am going to pull everything from it including the gauges and junk the the hull.

Well, the guy sold it out from under me as I was literally on my way to get it and didn't tell me until I got there. After I called and said I was on my way. What a low move.

Well, time to spam up his phone with bogus Facebook marketplace stuff. Grab pics off google and start posting stuff.......'Solid old '55 Chevy hardtop, I have too many projects, this has to go $1500 cash.' OR 'Matco toolbox, my brother gave it to me but I just don't have the room, first $300 takes it.'

Keep at it, like something new every evening before bed with his number. That'll teach that prick!

Thought about doing just that. Guess, I will be piecing it together. Complete Gray box with harness, dess, etc. Engine, Fuel and oil gauge. etc. Does anyone have pics of where everything mounted in a 96 GTi?

I sourced a 96 spx. Should I use the bronze pump or is the stock pump fine? I am considering swapping the impeller for a solas concord 14/22 even though I have the prop from the 717 spx. I am more interested in a tad more low end pull vs 1 or 2 mph on top. Is the 14/22 still the best prop for a stock 717 in a gt hull? Lastly,i have the complete exhaust from the spx including the thru hull. Can I still use the thru hull in the pump cavity from the 587?

I would use the bronze pump myself. Impeller.....you're just going to have to try something and see what works best. Exhaust, if the piping is close to the 717 size it will be fine. If it's 1/2" smaller then I would change that out too. Otherwise it will be a restriction.

Thanks. I will double check the size of the outlet. I am trying to come up with a way to use the whole pump including the vts nozzle from the spx. Thinking to try and come up with a bracket to come off the top pump bolt and make a adjustable rod for the steering nozzle so I can have a manual trim. Or would a pump wedge work good on a first gen 3 seater?

Well it has started. I have the old engine and pump out. I bought a 95 GTX for parts. I am taking the pump and nozzles and reverse bucket, sponsons and mirrors. My question is about the nozzle setup. The old 587 nozzles are smaller than the 95 ones. With a Solas 14/22 and a stock dual carb 717 should I run the stock smaller nozzles or the larger ones?

                            Thanks in advance!

Definately go with the larger ones.
