  • what would cause flooding?

My 1997 GTI fires up and runs fine. However....recently when I turn it off, it's flooded and hard to start. Once restarted (and excessive fuel clears out) it runs fine until I turn it off.

something happened to carb and I don't know what it is.

is there a way I install the check valves backwards?
    no changes to spring
    Needle?

Check out your needle/seat in the carburetor.

Sometimes the needle can be stuck in the seat.
If it has a groove on the needle valve, it may need to be replaced.

      Good luck

        single carb, so both cylinders.

I will check needle and seat (once it warms up here)

thank both of you....I appreciate this

I should be testing this soon but might be inner crank seals oiling down the spark plug.
