  • Coil packs and best sources? 1999 GTX limited.

Been trouble shooting a 99 GTX. Starts and runs great at home. Get it out to the lake and it randomly cuts out and is hard to start after a bit of driving. Carbs are factory overhauled, fuel lines, filters replaced. It acts more like ignition than fuel. Pretty sure carbs are good.

Looks like it may have some cheap aftermarket coil packs on it. Suspect they may be overheating. What is the best source for a decent coil? OEM? Any decent aftermarket coils? What's the best route here?

    Thanks!

I've rarely ever see a bad coil. Usually the plug wires break down. That being said, go with used or new oem.

Another thing to check on those is voltage when it starts acting up. If it's dropping out or not keeping the battery charged then you'll need to wire in an external regulator as the stock one is INSIDE the MPEM.

Appreciate the input.. I’ll get a volt meter on it and watch it. It has decent compression and starts very easily and stays running with no issues on the trailer. Soon as I get it in the water it runs well for maybe 3-4 minutes. Will hit 50ish or so and feels peppy. Then it starts randomly cutting off completely. Like the battery was disconnected. Slightly hard to start after that and progressively gets worse and harder to start. Eventually leaving you stranded. Has a new bat, overhauled carbs, fresh gas. Not sure what else to check. I grabbed 2 new OEM coils to try. Starter just crapped out so I have a new one of those to install too.

Did you check for a burnt rubber hose between the exhaust pipe and the waterbox?

I'll look again, but I believe the cooling system is working ok. Reason I say that is it was clogged with a bunch of garbage when I bought it and I blew out all the lines and reconnected them all.

A quick easy check is just look for sooty residue. If there is ANY sooty, oily residue then there is an exhaust leak.
