  • Starter drive/bendix replacement?

How hard is it to replace the bendix? Like an idiot I changed the starter with new thinking it was similar to a car starter. Same issue it just spins with no engagement. It the bendix something I can get at easily? Link to a manual or video of this procedure?

    thanks

Years ago I had a 2 stroke starter go bad. I brought it my local starter/alternator repair shop and he rebuilt it no prob. Pretty cheap too. He had the parts in stock. Said some thing about they were pretty much all the same inside. You may try taking yours to someplace like that. They may, if nothing else be able to steer you in the right direction.

Starter works great. The starters on these plug into a bendix gear assy that shoots out and enguages the flywheel. This is what is malfunctioning on mine. I just replaced the starter. But the old one was fine as well.

The other piece in the picture is what I'm wondering how to access/replace.

      Thank you!

Almost looks like you have to take the crank case apart? Surly not?! I can hear the starter spinning million miles an hour. by passed solenoid and fed it plenty of amps. Even tried a car battery hooked straight to it.

Sure hope not.... any help appreciated!

Looks like you have a 951. You'll need to remove the exhaust pipe. Unbolt the oil pump and lay it aside. Unplug the stator connector. Unbolt the front engine mount. Shove a block of wood under the engine for support and pull the mount out of the way. Unbolt and remove the front stator housing. And finally remove the 2 bolts holding the plastic bendix support and pull out the failed bendix. DON'T LOSE THE LITTLE PLASTIC FINGERED OIL PUMP DRIVE. Fun job for sure.
