Are you making backing plates for them as well?
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong

I know RXP6 had a really cool looking set up made and I witnessed it handle very well. They were aluminum with an angle broke in. Not sure if he makes these for other people or not.

No backing plates, I bought a set of Riva backing plates from a member on here that had misplaced the blades. So I had some scrap 3/8" layin around and figured I would just make my own.

Hmmm....I'll have to see if I can find them, It sure wouldn't be hard to manipulate the blade size / shape now that I have the mounting holes dialed in CAD.

You can go 1/4" thick on the blade...I did, worked well.

If you go aluminum backing AND blade, then any impact will be transmitted directly to the hull...OUCH. From making sponson sets for years I would recommend doing the backing out of aluminum, but cut the blade out of thick plastic, like 1/2"...That way the blade will break/crack and absorb the hit...Its easier (and cheaper) to unbolt and replace a blade than it is to do hull repair...

we use all our own sponsons here in oz which are made by an engineering firm.. they are not cheap. the backing plate is a nylon type material with aluminium blades... we have been running them for years...

Why not go with riva or nylon backing plate and aluminum blades?
Don't see why that would not work.

On the bare aluminum would it be best to coat with something?

He was talking about making a backing plate out of aluminum...Its easier to make it out of plastic than aluminum, with angles and such...Blade can be aluminum, either coat it or leave it raw. You can clean them up with a scotch brite pad when they are raw...

I'm planning on having the set I made for myself powdercoated black. Cutting a few more sets for a couple members on here also.
