  • 13/18R Solas for RXPX300 destroyed!

So yesterday was my first test tune with all my mods installed for full stg 2 on the RXPX300. I put it in the water and proceed to head out on the river everything feels smooth i plain out and i did feel a slight roughness vibration but it went away, throttle response with the new prop felt a bit snappier and more planted so i was excited. At this moment i have yet to mash the throttle just wanted to baby it for a few minutes. Well i started to pic up speed and it also began to get choppy and then i felt something as if the prop backed off the shaft and i started to feel a pretty violent vibration and clangy noise. I literally made it 2 minutes out from the marina when this happened. Long story short i got it back to the ramp pulled it out and brought it home. Immediately proceeded to remove pump to find the following in the pics. The wear ring is a bit scuffed but nothing major my finger nail can barely grab scoring and stock prop fits like a glove so i know i didnt lose any meat off the wear ring. However the prop is completely ground down. When i took pump off the prop had spun lose somehow. Never in my years of swaping and changing impellers have i ever had one spin lose on me. This is not my first rodeo. I spoke with a few people who race and are associated with Riva and we are now looking into the idea of a possible unbalanced impeller. Could this really be the case. Another friend of mine has this prop and he might change his out due to the amount of vibration its causing him as well. Let me know what you guys think. Just thought id bring this up.

Looks more like a clearance issue to me..maybe under acceleration the impeller is flexing?

I was changing impellers on my 260 the other week and the stock impeller, which I put on previous week and torqued to 92ftlb, was quite loose. Never seen that before as well.

How about mine blew apart and caused other damages. Apparently there is a bad batch and they are not balanced. Found out from a local reputable shop. Hence why now all of a sudden the are (Out of stock)... Pretty upset because this has caused damage to my ski. And BRAND new wear ring.

I wasn't planing to post this up but now that there are more reports I feel that this is more than just fluke and is becoming a safety issue. This happened to mine on the Fourth of July at the beginning of the day. Untouched, Less than 10hrs on a scom ski. I was doing a wide open run at about 77 mph when rpms starting dropping quickly from 8000 to 7700. In that WTF is going on moment as I started to let off, the ski vibrated violently and threw me hard on bars. Luckily I was sitting down and locked in so I held on. I have no doubt that if I had been stretched out on the back trying to getting max speed out of it, I would have come off at over 75mph. Got it to the beach and with help rolled it over to find the Blade ruptured in the middle at the hub and folding over. Destroyed brand new wear ring as well. Put her back on the trailer and spent the rest of the day drinking on the beach.

I suggest people with this prop inspect it for cracks and fatigue.

Riva seems to think its Porisity in the casting. But I honestly think they made the blades too thin and they are flexing under load. I sent mine back to Riva for inspection so we shall see what they say.

do you guys secure the wear ring with the 2 bolt??UHH just be careful leaving the wear ring loose..remember this rings are like the old styles..you need to drill holes on the SS rings or glue down..

I've had 3 stainless rings and I have never been able to remove any of them. I have no concern of them coming out. No need to glue or screw them down IMO.

Damien, I have seen 3 other failures with blades ripping clean off of the impeller hub just as with the pics posted by tomespo and mibunkerking. Yours seems like a different failure, maybe from not tightening the impeller properly and it coming loose, or by an out of balance blade and vibration. I'm going to go with out of balance... that said, I'm getting you a free replacement. Do not worry! When you buy from this forums online store I will have your back and I will get you taken care of. Be on the lookout for an email from me!

                              Thanks!
                              Jerry
