  • RXT 260 sluggish at low RPM but responsive and fast once over 45MPH, will run 67MPH??

I have a nice condition 2011 RXT-X 260 with 125 hours that starts and runs okay but is sluggish and not very responsive and extremely slow to build speed up to roughly 45mph and then everything suddenly seems 'normal' for this machine, has plenty of power and is responsive all the way up to it's normal top speed of around 67mph. I'm very stumped, here is the back story:

Last winter I did a supercharger rebuild on it (using OEM parts from RIVA), I checked and re-checked all my steps to ensure I was doing everything by the book and torqued things as I should although I admit I used a harbor freight torque wrench.
I also replaced a (leaky) PTO bearing and found I had a stuck floating ring or top hat so had to cut that off only to find the drive shaft and impeller splines were all dried out, waved over and shot so she got a new shaft, impeller, pto bearing, bellows and carbon ring too.

This spring despite never having starting issues with this ski, it was starting hard and running rough, this has been seemingly solved and due to a leaky injector, you can see that thread here http://greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=293827
After replacing one injector, the starting rough running issues seemed to go away, I put it in the water and have the sluggish at lower RPM issue but once I hit 45 or so (maybe even a little less) it takes off like a rocket and is responsive and like it used to be all the way up to 67mph or so.

It's not a 'mode setting' issue as I've seen some suggest in similar unsolved threads, it's not the learning key (the symptoms are all much slower than those things). I can't imagine this is a fuel delivery problem because you only need more fuel at higher RPMs where it runs well, the spark plugs haven't been replaced this year but only have maybe 20 hours on them and all 3 cylinders are verified to be getting spark. The IC was replaced by the dealer under warranty when I got the ski around 35 hours and I have no reason to believe the current one has a problem. A friend who's pretty engine savvy suggested maybe there's something wrong with how the engine is handling boost pressure but eh, I don't know. He also thought a supercharger clutch slippage issue was not to blame because at the higher RPMs an improperly adjusted clutch slip would only slip even more providing even less power at higher speeds.

Would a CanDoo help me in diagnosing this sort of mystery given I do not have any lights on the dash?

I've lost a whole season of riding on this machine, I'd love to upgrade to a used ST3 hull for it's better layout but mine's in far too nice of condition to dump for cheap not running right, the whole situation stumps and saddens me. Any suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated.

Frustrating as hell. What do the plugs look like? I would probably have changed all the injectors and plugs just to take those items off the list of possibilities. I wonder if you have a vacuum leak.

If you have a good buddie with a 260 I would try swapping all the injectors and do a quick test. If injectors are dumping too much fuel at the lower RPMs it could feel sluggish.

I do, but that might take some convincing

The plugs look decent, I did run it then took the plugs out right after to check but there was some runny warm dielectric and some fogging oil in the tubes that ran down the plug threads onto the tip when I pulled the plugs so I couldn't visibly tell if they were wet with gas but they did not smell like gas at all. Wouldn't a vacuum leak cause rough idle and set off a light like in a car? I can't think of where a leak would be based on what' I worked on and what I have checked but I suppose I've seen weirder things.

Do not look at the plugs.

            CHANGE THEM!

Did you ever resolve the issue? I am having a similar experience. Plugs look perfect on mine, nice light brown. I cleaned all the injectors and they flow good with a nice spray pattern. Already replaced the plugs twice, no difference.

No, I havenÔÇÖt resolved it though I had a conversation with the folks at candoo to ask if they thought their tool would help me resolve the issue given that there are no check engine lights or codes to read and he candidly doubted it though he did recommend replacing the spark plugs as well even though they only have about 20 hours on them which I will do next, IÔÇÖm over an hour from a launch so testing isnÔÇÖt so easy. I have not pulled the trigger on all new coils and injectors as the parts are over a grand and may not even solve the issue. Unfortunately my riding buddy was not interested in letting me borrow his coils and injectors

i Would change or clean the other two injectors, CandooPro does help find problem by activating injectors to check working or not or fuel levels, have you check fuel pressure when running.

I just cleaned the injectors and no change but I have a second RXT so I'll swap them and see if there is any difference

SOLUTION: was a bad head gasket. I'm guessing probably due to a leaky injector that caused a backfire while on the hose out of water. I sold the ski, the new owner took it to the dealer and that was the diagnosis.
